SciPy and PyGSL

I've been spending a little time getting to know the Gnu Scientific Library. It shares a lot of the strengths with SciPy. I notice that there is a fledgling effort to make python wrappers to the GSL, and I now wonder how the SciPy community sees such an effort: competition, fellow warriors, or potential successor? I for one would like to see the GSL become more of a standard in the scientific computing field, so I'd like to see PyGSL get support. But not necessarily at the expense of SciPy. Thoughts? I referred to some of the updated examples and saw that things like mydict.ptr() are no longer used. My updated code now compiles, with only the following warning: exceptions.ImportError: /usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/scipy/linalg/_flinalg.so: undefined symbol: dlaswp_ Cheers, cjf -- Christopher J. strange weave.inline errors in weave using gcc3.2

I have installed weave from cvs, and with gcc3.2 all of the tests run fine. However, when I run it with some of my code, Bad Things happen. As much as I know, a wrapper around a GPL library should not be "infected" by the GPL, since it does not include a copy of the GPLed source code. Am I wrong? cannot build SciPy on Redhat 8.0

Hi folks, I am trying to build SciPy on a new installation of RedHat 8.0, but am ahving trouble getting out of the gate. I have installed all of the prerequisite packages, but when I try and run "python setup.py install", I get the following: Traceback (most recent call last): File "setup.py", line 111, in ? setup_package() File "setup.py", line 90, in setup_package config_list += map(get_separate_package_config,separate_packages) File "setup.py", line 74, in get_separate_package_config return get_package_config(name,'') File "setup.py", line 67, in get_package_config mod = __import__('setup_'+os.path.basename(name)) ImportError: No module named setup_scipy_distutils I clearly have a setup_scipy_distutils in my /usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/scipy_distutils, so I don't know why I am getting this error. I hope someone can clarify this for me. Has anyone ever tried putting together rpm packages? Thanks, Chris Fonnesbeck

Resultant of two polynomials - Sylvester matrix

Dear scipy-user: I stumbled upon a request on the internet by Nils Wagner. The request is "I am looking for a function which computes the resultant of two polynomials. It is defined to be the determinant of their Sylvester matrix. A small example would be appreciated." About 15 years ago I read what looks like the answer to the question in the Fondren Library at Rice University in a book by Yitzhak Katznelson entitled "Yale Lecture Series," or something like that, published in 1960. If you have two polynomials A + Bx + Cx^2 + Dx^3 and E + Fx + Gx^2, then the resultant of the two is the determinant of the 5 x 5 matrix with the following elements: A 0 E 0 0 B A F E 0 C B G F E D C 0 G F 0 D 0 0 G The polynomials have a common root if and only if the determinant--the resultant is zero. The resultant is related to the product of the difference of each pair of roots--one from each polynomial. You can define the resultant for any pair of polynomials in one variable. A polynomial of degree m and another of degree n lead to an (m+n) x (m+n) determinant as their resultant. Katznelson's lecture, which is described above, pertains to two polynomials of one variable. If you have two polynomials of more than one variable, you can treat them as polynomials of one variable--treating the additional variables as constants and dropping them into the resultant. The result is one polynomial that has one fewer variable than the two polynomials you had originally. By iterating this process you can take a system of polynomial equations in several variables and eliminate as many variables as there are equations in excess of one. Besides this recursive procedure, there are other ways to generalize the resultant to solve any system of polynomial equations. You can also use the resultant to define a polynomial whose roots are the sum, difference, product or quotient of the roots of other polynomials. I hope this is helpful. Sincerely, Tom Zavist

Overflow Errors

Hi I'm using python 2.2.2 I know there are some issues with overflow errors So should this version be reompiled with -lieee as I've seen suggested on another thread and if so does this mean I have to adjust the Makefile or can it be done through the configure script Regards Ed Hartley

scipy to C ?

Is there a tool to convert a (sci)python program into a C program? something like what the Matlab compiler is supossed to do (never tried) with matlab scripts? My interest is on improving the performance of scipy scripts that use (unavoidable, at least for me) "for loops".
