"the email address that I have for the list doesn't exist"....what
does that mean exactly?  Does it mean "you got an error message saying
<list-address> is unknown or invalid"?

You need the set of aliases that newlist informs you of added to your
mailserver aliases, usually manually.

You also apparently need to read the instructions in README,
and to read what newlist says to you.
