Dan, I haven't taught myself python either. That's why I use procmail.
This recipe would do it, intercepting the message before it hits your list.

.yourlist.procmailrc:

TMPDIR=/tmp
MAILDIR=$TMPDIR
LOGFILE=/dev/null
