Changing return types in C API

One thing I like about numarray's "native" C API is that for functions that return arrays, the return type is PyArrayObject *, as opposed to the Numeric-compatible API, where the return types are PyObject *. Returning PyObject * in this case basically means you're *always* doing a cast like this: PyObject *o; PyArrayObject *a; a = (PyArrayObject *)PyArray_ContiguousFromObject(o, PyArray_DOUBLE, 2, 2); Could we change the API so that PyArrayObject * is used as the return type? On a similar note: the 'data' member of PyArrayObject's is a char *, where it really should be a void *. Being a void pointer would have the advantage of not needing the cast in cases like this: double *adata = (double)(a->data); It would also mean that accidentally dereferencing the pointer would be a compiler error: currently, a->data[0] is valid, but if a->data was a void *, it wouldn't be. Both of these changes wouldn't require recompiling extensions (since we're just relabelling what the pointer types are), and would be source-compatible with old code (since the casts used would now be superfluous). Newer code will also be easier to write. scipy.sparse + umfpack + system_info

Hi all, I have added a basic umfpack detection support to numpy.distutils.system_info() - see example site.cfg below (and replace <UMFPACKv4.4_root>...). The Umfpack wrapper still resides in the sandbox, but its setup.py now uses the detection stuff. Now I would like to move the wrapper somewhere under scipy.sparse and I hit a problem: umpfack.py depends on scipy.sparse, since it uses the CSR/CSC matrix formats, but also scipy.sparse uses umfpack.py for solving linear equations.if present. How to get out of this circular dependency problem? Deleting a recipe in the cookbook wiki

problem importing numpy.lib.scimath from gplt

Hi I picked this up using the the gplt module in recent SVN numpy/scipy versions. FFT with DJBFFT failing

Hello all, I've found that DJBFFT causes scipy to fail several tests. These failures only occur when DJBFFT is found by distutils when building. I'm running the current SVN copies of both scipy and numpy. masked_array drops fill_value

Hi all, In ma.py the masked_array function the fill_value of the array passed in is not used. The code currently looks like this: def masked_array (a, mask=nomask, fill_value=None): """masked_array(a, mask=nomask) = array(a, mask=mask, copy=0, fill_value=fill_value) """ return array(a, mask=mask, copy=0, fill_value=fill_value) It seems to me that using the fill_value from a (if it is a MaskedArray) would be the sane thing to do? Something like if fill_value == None and isinstance(a, MaskedArray): fill_value = a.fill_value() return array(a, mask=mask, copy=0, fill_value=fill_value) As it stands, all the ma functions such as transpose, reshape, etc lose the fill_value which seems wrong to me. This release includes support for both the NUMPY and NUMARRAY array packages. This software can be downloaded at: http://www.stsci.edu/resources/software_hardware/pyfits/Download The NUMPY support in PyFITS is not nearly as well tested as the NUMARRAY support. We expect that you will encounter bugs. Please send bug reports to "help(a)stsci.edu". We intend to support NUMARRAY and NUMPY simultaneously for a transition period of no less than 1 year. Eventually, however, support for NUMARRAY will disappear. During this period, it is likely that new features will appear only for NUMPY.
