Now that I have SciPy working with python (under NT not 95), and am thoroughly enjoying the experience of strolling up the gentle learning curve, I have a few questions which seasoned users might be able to help me with. (I hope it's not considered poor etiquette to ask multiple questions in a single post!) 1) I have a module which I want to edit and test incrementally by invoking functions interactively in IDLE after I have typed "from mymodule import *". Do I really have to quit and restart IDLE after every change? One of the books mentions reload, but this just raises a NameError: name 'mymodule' is not defined. What is the correct way to do edit-run cycles? 2) Is there any way I can get IDLE (or plain python) to execute "import gui_thread/from scipy import plt/from scipy import *" automatically when I start it up? Given the fact I have to quit and restart repeatedly, it is a bit of a pain to have to retype these statements. (I prefer to use IDLE because the syntax coloring and function arg hints are really helpful.) 3) I'm extracting 16 bit integers from a binary data file which consists of consecutive frames of 256 digitized channels (which follow a fixed sized header). I want to process each channel in turn. This means repeatedly seeking forward, reading a integer, and appending the value to an array. Then I have to write the processed values back to the file. The way I am doing it is as follows: def ReadChannel(chan): trace = array('d') word = array('H') for i in range(nframes): offset = ( chan + 256*i + 154 ) * 2 f.seek(offset) word.fromfile(f, 1) trace.append(float(word[0])) word.pop() f.close() return trace def WriteChannel(trace, chan): word = array('H', [0]) f = open(filename, 'r+b') for i in range(nframes): offset = ( chan + 256*i + 154 ) * 2 f.seek(offset) word[0] = trace[i] # truncation ok word.tofile(f) f.close() The code for writing is quite intuitive, whereas that for reading is not - because it involves an additional call to 'pop'. It seems strangely asymmetric to me. But is this a good way to handle this situation? Thanks very much in advance! Francis

Hello All, First, an introduction: My name is Adam Barker, and I recently started working with Enthought on the Scipy project. I'll be taking care of most of the system administration tasks for the Scipy website and mailing lists, so if you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them in a timely manner. Second, we're doing a bit of work on the websites and the mailing lists. Specifically, we're moving them to a different set of machines and a different service provider this week. Hopefully the move will be transparent, but there might be a few hiccups this week as everything gets finished. We're going to be conservative with the switchover to avoid interruption of service if possible. Thanks for that, John. I decided meanwhile to take a step back to python 2.1 and compatible addons (including SciPy). That works very nicely on my NT machine. (Unfortunately, wxPython still crashes on Win 95, even with compatible versions of everything. But I can start development work on the other computer.) Francis At 16:01 06/05/02 +0100, John J. Installing onto Python 2.2.1 (windows)

Hi! Total newbie here, but very enthusiastic about the potential for python and SciPy. I have already installed on my Win95 system: Python-2.2.1.exe ActiveTcl8.3.4.2-1-win32-ix86.exe Numeric-21.0.win32-py2.2.exe wxPython-2.3.2.1-Py22-hybrid.exe and have had python and IDLE running. (Trying to run the wxPython demo gives "PYTHON caused an exception c06d007eH in module WXMSW232H.DLL at 0157:00bf59aa." but I guess that's OT for this mailing list.) My problem is that when I run SciPy-0.1.win32-py2.1.exe the "Select python installation to use" box is blank. Is that because this version was meant to be installed with python2.1? I read a message in the archive where someone suggested getting 0.2 from CVS. I'm not sure how to do this - it all looks rather complicated and I would much prefer to run a single Windows executable! :-) Is there a copy of SciPy-0.2.win32-py2.2.exe available somewhere? Thanks! Thanks, Eric. Following your instructions, I successfully installed scipy-0.1 under python2.1, and scipy-0.2 ("snapshot") under python2.2. When I run scipy.test (both 0.1 and 0.2) I do get the following: <unittest.TextTestRunner instance at 0x845f8ac> Don't know if this is a problem or not. Otherwise, it seems to be working fine. Thanks, Eric. However, I'm already using Numeric-21.0 As an experiment, I installed python2.1.3 and then Numeric-21.0.
