[issue9014] Incorrect documentation of the PyObject_HEAD macro

New submission from Renato Cunha <renato(a)renatocunha.com>: PyObject_HEAD's documentation in py3k (http://docs.python.org/dev/py3k/c-api/structures.html#PyObject_HEAD) uses the same content used in the python 2.x's docs which is wrong, as there were some API changes. PyObject_HEAD is actually defined as #define PyObject_HEAD PyObject ob_base; with PyObject defined as typedef struct _object { _PyObject_HEAD_EXTRA Py_ssize_t ob_refcnt; struct _typeobject *ob_type; } PyObject; (The PyTRACE_REFS discussion is still valid, though.) "compatible" means that it has an __int__() / __float__() / __complex__() method, or nb_int / nb_float of Py_TYPE(obj)->tp_as_number->nb_int is defined (tp_as_number has no nb_complex). I suppose that the following paragraph is also outdated: "It is possible to pass "long" integers (integers whose value exceeds the platform's :const:`LONG_MAX`) however no proper range checking is done --- the most significant bits are silently truncated when the receiving field is too small to receive the value (actually, the semantics are inherited from downcasts in C --- your mileage may vary)." Reedy mentioned in his comment on issue 7061, turtle documentation is lacking information on how speed "codes" 0-10 translate into actual turtle speed. Attached script measures the speed of the two primitive operations that form the basis of turtle functionality at various speed settings. The results below show highly irregular pattern. The columns are: the speed code, time to draw a 200 unit line, time to complete a 360 degrees turn and the ratio of the two times. 0: 0.01 0.01 0.83 1: 1.04 2.05 0.51 2: 0.49 1.06 0.46 3: 0.30 0.72 0.42 4: 0.23 0.54 0.44 5: 0.17 0.44 0.38 6: 0.13 0.39 0.35 7: 0.08 0.32 0.26 8: 0.08 0.28 0.30 9: 0.10 0.27 0.37 10: 0.08 0.23 0.36 >From the source code, it appears that the on-screen speed is controlled by the number of animation steps while each step takes approximately time controlled by the "delay" setting that defaults to 10 milliseconds. The number of steps is determined by somewhat peculiar computations. This file is referenced from C-API documentation [1], but is not accessible as a hyperlink. Some of the recommendations in this file are out of date, in particular those that recommend setting make variables where a configure switch is available. I believe it would be best to retire Misc/SpecialBuilds.txt and move still relevant sections to proper .rst files. The search results tab displays incorrect characters for various topic titles. It seems to be an encoding issue. For example, searching for 'json' yields the following results: - 18.2 json â€” JSON encoder and decoder - Whatâ€™s New in Python 2.6 I noticed this issue on Windows XP 32-bit and Windows 7 64-bit.
