Hello dear Python gods :) I'm new at Python and was going over the documentation . This useful paragraph : https://docs.python.org/3.7/tutorial/stdlib.html#data-compression provides info for compressing text but IMHO some important additional info is needed, without which I expect nearly all users would get stuck just as I have. Moreover, while looking for a solution I noticed a lot of articles with outdated examples which no longer work - this confused me even more to the point I started suspecting something was amiss on my end... Anyhow, adding this info would do the trick : zlib works only with bytes and in Python 3.x strings are no longer bytes. Example : *>>> zlib.compress('this is a sample string which does not work in zlib because it requires bytes and not unicode')Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>TypeError: a bytes-like object is required, not 'str'>>>* Luckily Python has a very simple solution for this : encode to utf-8, compress, decode back to unicode like so : *>>> text = 'this is a sample string which does not work in zlib because it requires bytes and not unicode with chars like this »שלום '>>> encoded = text.encode()>>> text = 'this is a sample with unicode chars »שלום '>>> encoded = text.encode()>>> compressed = zlib.compress(encoded)>>> decompressed = zlib.decompress(compressed)>>> decoded = decompressed.decode()>>> len(text),len(encoded),len(compressed) #notice that compression of short strings can be larger than the original(42, 47, 54)>>> print(text,'\n',encoded,'\n',compressed)this is a sample with unicode chars »שלום b'this is a sample with unicode chars \xc2\xbb\xd7\xa9\xd7\x9c\xd7\x95\xd7\x9d ' b'x\x9c+\xc9\xc8,V\x00\xa2D\x85\xe2\xc4\xdc\x82\x9cT\x85\xf2\xcc\x92\x0c\x85\xd2\xbc\xcc\xe4\xfc\x94T\x85\xe4\x8c\xc4\xa2b\x85C\xbb\xaf\xaf\xbc>\xe7\xfa\xd4\xebs\x15\x00\xb2K\x14|'>>> text == decodedTrue* Thank you ! SMTPHandler secure argument without credentials

logging.handlers.SMTPHandler only uses the 'secure' argument when credentials are specified. https://docs.python.org/3/library/logging.handlers.html#logging.handlers.SM… says: "To specify the use of a secure protocol (TLS), pass in a tuple to the secure argument. This will only be used when authentication credentials are supplied." The docstring confirms this, but I can't find an explanation of the intent behind this behaviour. Perhaps it would be a good idea to describe this as well.

Suspected bug

Hello. So I managed to fix it, but I think I had an experience with a bug... It seems that a slice of a numpy array gave me some trouble. Only after redefining the slice as a numpy array would the code run as normal again. In other words: NOT working: zk = np.array(list1) zk2 = zk[a:b] Working: zk = np.array(list1) zk2 = np.array(zk[a:b]) I also checked and it does say that a slice of an array should be an array: in: zk[a:b] out: arra(list1[a:b]) The problem was that it would link the two variables zk and zk2 together: zk = array1 zk2 = array1[a:b] When i changed zk2[0] to a different value, the corresponding element, zk[a], also changes. So for example: zk = np.array([1,2,3,4,5]) zk2 = np.array(zk[1:4]) in: print(zk) print(zk2) out: array([1,2,3,4,5]) array([2,3,4]) in: zk_2[0] = 0 print(zk) print(zk2) out: array([1,0,3,4,5]) array([0,3,4]) Additional information: - zk is read in from a .csv file using pandas. - I am using Spyder/Anaconda - When i change a value of zk_2 in the command window, zk remains the same Allright, thought I would let someone know. Is this sample code not too clear

Hi, I saw a pice of code about “command line argument”: >>> import sys >>> print(sys.argv) ['demo.py', 'one', 'two', 'three'] on this page: https://docs.python.org/3/tutorial/stdlib.html#command-line-arguments It shows how to get a list of parameters and looks like it's in interactive mode. But I can't do the same thing in interactive mode, sys.argv is always return empty list, unless I put these code in a script and execute it. Does this mean this sample code not too clear? Error in Python Tutorial Section 9.2

In section 9.2, a scope is described as "a textual region of a Python program". In a subsequent paragraph it states "Usually, the local scope references the local names of the (textually) current function." The word "textually" is repeated 3 more times in the paragraphs that follow. After rereading the section and looking up the words "textual" and "textually", I believe what the author means say "context" and "contextually". interested in helping the documentation team

I am a Second Year CS-Engineering student, and I wanted to start my journey into open source contribution, and I think starting off with helping in documentation would be a great idea. And python is a programming language that I use daily for multiple reasons, so I would be very interested in making a small contribution to improving it. It would really be helpful if someone guided me through making any required documentation changes, or atleast give me guidance on how to be ready to work, if I am not experienced enough. Hello, I'm not sure if this is a bug, but I believe where it says makes 11 recursive calls the other 10 are cached it should either be that both say 10 or both say 11. See attached screenshot. Thanks Robert

Hi Apologies if I am being naïve but in https://docs.python.org/3/tutorial/introduction.html#lists Is the 5 in >>> # now remove them >>> letters[2:5] = [] >>> letters ['a', 'b', 'f', 'g'] deliberate as it only replaces 3 not 4 letters. Regards Simon
