At the top of the htmllib module: {{{ Deprecated since version 2.6: The htmllib module has been removed in Python 3. }}} Source: https://docs.python.org/2/library/htmllib.html#module-htmllib Newcomers need more advice: Which library should be used? I know there are many html parsing libraries. But there should be a sane default for newcomers. Is there already an agreement of a sane default html parsing library? New submission from Abraham Smith: Some students were working on matrix routines for practice. The following code: >>> L = [ [0]*3 ]*3 >>> for i in range(3): ... for j in range(3): ... if i==j: L[i][j]=1 was expected to return [[1,0,0],[0,1,0],[0,0,1]] but it returned [[1,1,1],[1,1,1],[1,1,1]] because the list [0]*3 was being interned silently, so all three rows were the same memory! To see this, I did >>> map(id, L) [139634871681464, 139634871681464, 139634871681464] On the other hand >>> M=[ [ 0 for i in range(3) ] for j in range(3) ] does not intern: >>> map(id, L) [139634871631672, 139634871681608, 139634871681680] so the above loop works as expected. This is true in both python 2.7 and 3.4. This is very confusing to users! If this intern behavior with [0]*3 is intended, it should be documented more clearly, because this is something that new students of python might encounter right away when playing with the language's list methods. I didn't see any reference to interning in the discussion of lists in the standard library reference. Moreover, I also could not find any reference to the automatic interning of mutable objects, such as lists. [issue23623] Python 3.5 docs need to clarify how to set PATH, etc

New submission from Paul Moore: With Python 3.5 on Windows defaulting (for all users installs) to the read-only "Program Files" directory, and with "Add Python to PATH" having problems adding the per-user "user scripts" directory to PATH, the Python 3.5 documentation needs to explain the recommended practice for running Python 3.5 from the command line on Windows. Issues that should be covered include: - System installs with need to be run from an elevated prompt, are user installs now the recommended approach? (It's worth noting in that case that user installs re *not* recommended for older versions, as the user Scripts directory wasn't versioned until Python 3.5) - How to add the correct directories to PATH (including the user scripts directory) - for both CMD and powershell users and in an existing shell as well as a new one (i.e, no "Python command prompt" shortcuts!) - How to add the correct directories persistently, so they are available to all programs on startup. - While the "py" launcher solves the problem of running Python, and some modules via -m (such as pip), many packages install console scripts which do not have an equivalent -m invocation, so "use the launcher" is not a complete solution. The documentation should clarify where (or if) 3rd party documentation needs to comment on Windows path difficulties.
