I find pypy translator output c files consist too many 'goto' statement. Its hard to read and understand these c files. I try to make it output with c keywords: if..else.. while...break...continue and now the output c file looks pretty better. my pypy version is pypy-pypy-2346207d9946 download from: https://bitbucket.org/pypy/pypy/get/release-1.8.zip test sample input file a2.py: import sys def entry_point(argv): a = [1,2,3,4] a.extend([4,5]) print a return len(a) def target(*args): return entry_point, None if __name__ == '__main__': entry_point(sys.argv) after run command: translator\goal\translate.py a2.py I can find file a2.c in my temperary directory. The funcion pypy_g_entry_point in it is 662 lines and contains 103 goto. after replace 2 attach files : pypy\translator\c\funcgen.py pypy\translator\c\bookaa_cpp.py and run the command again, I get a2.c with pypy_g_entry_point is 539 lines and only contains 20 goto. I am still work hard try to improve pypy to get readable c++ output. Anyone interest in this ? Bookaa

cppyy: C++ bindings for PyPy

Hi, as detailed in a couple of blog posts in the past (*), for some time now we have been working on making C++ bindings through the Reflex package available on PyPy, in the form of the "cppyy" module. Software is never done, and that is true also in this case, but it has reached a level of maturity at which it can be said to be usable. Initial docs are now up on: http://doc.pypy.org/en/latest/cppyy.html with instructions on how to setup the reflex-support branch and how to test it out. The documentation will be updated with more advanced and detailed topics in the next couple of weeks or so. There's a sizable (non-PyPy) set of unit tests that still need to be worked through, thus development will steadily continue at its current pace. Still, if you find that cppyy almost works for you except for a particular feature, feel free to ask for it to be prioritized. The biggest obstacle for most people (that are not in the field of HEP) will be the current set of dependencies. Although the dependency set for cppyy is really only Reflex, which could be distributed separately, for the CPython equivalent code, the dependency set is a large portion of the ROOT class library. The medium-term plan then is to use Cling, which is based on CLang from llvm (http://root.cern.ch/drupal/content/cling) as the back-end. For this, there will be a PyCling on CPython, and all as stand-alone projects to remove the large dependency set. More interesting though, having Cling on the back of the bindings allows far more advanced features, such as dynamic setup of callbacks and cross language inheritance to put Python code into C++ frameworks. This has been prototyped successfully in Clings predecessor (CINT), but would be very hard to do in Reflex. Of course, an important reason for pushing this code out to the community somewhat early, is that it allows anyone so interested to start hacking on it and help shape it! A test bug in Windows system

My os is Win7, Trying pypy-pypy-2346207d9946 run: pypy>test_all.py translator\test\test_unsimplify.py will get a error: WindowsError: [Error 5] : .... it can not os.unlink(..) a file. I find this is because fd = os.open(tmpfile, os.O_WRONLY | os.O_CREAT, 0) will create a readonly file in Windows system. It should be fd = os.open(tmpfile, os.O_WRONLY | os.O_CREAT) After fix this, still many test errors.... Bookaa

[cpyext] partial fake PEP393 implementation to provide access to single unicode characters in strings

Hi, PEP393 (the new Unicode type in Py3.3) defines a rather useful C interface towards the characters of a Unicode string. I think it would be cool if cpyext provided that, so that access to single characters won't require copying the unicode buffer into C space anymore. I attached an untested (and likely non-working) patch that adds the most important parts of it. The implementation does not care about non-BMP characters, which (if I'm not mistaken) are encoded as surrogate pairs in PyPy. Apart from that, the functions behave like their CPython counterparts, which means that the implementation shouldn't get in the way of a future real PEP393 implementation. What do you think? I have no idea if the way the index access is done in PyUnicode_READ_CHAR() is in any way efficient - would be good if it was. Specifically, the intention is to avoid creating a 1-character unicode string copy before taking its ord(). Does this happen automatically, or is there a way to make sure it does that? Stefan

Ah, I missed the fact that you replied to us privately. That's generally a very bad idea, because if we are busy or forget about your bug, others would normally jump in. I'm not able to reproduce the bug you have: on my machine, compressing works fine, but decompressing consumes (slowly) more and more memory. I guess that this behavior is unexpected, unless you really have a reason. The point is that I'm running out of RAM (2GB total) before seeing any crash. I guess that the crash depends very finely on how much free memory+swap you have. Can you tell us these numbers? I could try to reproduce the crash using "ulimit", if necessary on machines with more RAM. However, looking carefully at the traceback, it is in theory possible to get it if the programs just fits in the memory, and tries to quit, calling the shut-down functions. These shut-down functions might need to allocate a little bit more. If this triggers collection, and if collection raises MemoryError, then we could get such a traceback. A bientôt, Armin.
