...well now this is very curious. My reply to you bounced, because I'm not subscribed to the google group version... but somehow I got your message in the first place?? Deleting legacy contents from core install guide?

I finally started working on the docs.python.org updates for PEP 453 tonight, and I'm just not seeing much salvageable information in http://docs.python.org/3/install/index.html. While it was a big step forward back in 1998, it seems to me that it has simply been left unmaintained for too long, and I think leaving that content in there for 3.4 will do more harm than good. The content won't be lost: not only will it continue to exist in source control, but I won't be touching the 2.x docs at http://docs.python.org/2/install/index.html. With that content gone from the end user installation guide in 3.4+, it can become just a very, very simple introduction to the core pip commands, and then a reference out to the packaging user guide for more info. what exactly does `wheel keygen` w/ `sign` do?

So I'm trying to be a good Python project owner for https://github.com/brettcannon/caniusepython3 so that means wanting to produce a universal wheel. While reading up on exactly what is needed I noticed there is `wheel keygen` which feeds `wheel sign`. But what exactly is the keygen producing? I'm assuming it's a private/public key but there is nothing about where those keys are stored, if I should keep them when I change machines, etc. And if this is PKI then I would assume I would want to get my public key signed by others in some web-of-trust to make sure that the signing is more than just a content hash. I do have a public/private GPG key from years ago when I tried to do the right thing and got it signed at PyCon, but once again the wheel docs don't say anything about GPG or reusing keys, etc. The wheel docs are so non-committal it makes it feel like that whatever `gpg keygen` produces is really not some performance shortcut and not really something to care about perpetuating the output of. So am I missing something or is `wheel keygen` just an optimization?

Cross-platform way to get default directory for binary files like console scripts?

I posted (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.lang.python/s3vLkVy2xJk) to comp.lang.python yesterday the following question: ------- Is there cross-platform way to get default directory for binary files (console scripts for instance) the same way one can use sys.executable to get path to the Python's interpreter in cross-platform way? Context: There's Python script which runs various tools like pip using subprocess and we would like to make sure we run tools that accompany Python's interpreter used to run this script. I found that out by manually trying the gcc command with the -lm flag and it compiled fine. My question ------------ What files do I need to edit in order to add this -lm flag and install numpy correctly ?

I have a couple tweaks which makes distutils more functional for the mscv family. Namely exposing the compiler/link flags that are necessary for linking against Python without dependence on the full msvc import being successful. There are a bunch of hack-arounds oribiting this problem, and I would be willing to do some work to smooth it over. Is there a github repo for this, or is it a part of python core.
