Just a quick comment. I just built 1.0.2 on my OS-X box, and it took me entirely too long to figure out how to run the tests. I suggest something like: "" after installing, to run the numpy unit tests, you can run: import numpy numpy.test() """ be added to the readme after the instructions on how to run setup.py install. A question: lapack_lite.so is linked against: /System/Library/Frameworks/Accelerate.framework/Versions/A/Accelerate Does that mean the Apple-supplied BLAS/LAPACK is being used? -Chris PS: it seems to be working fine with the Universal Framework build of Python2.5. Numpy with uclibc compiled python

Hey all, We started to try and compile the numpy module on an embedded PowerPC Xilinx board with no luck. This is one of the errors I get when I try to build the module on-board. It is due to the fact that the compiler is located in a different location than the original compiler for python (i think). I made symbolic links to fix the first error. The second more critical error that I cannot recover from is the "Error: Unrecognized opcode: `fldenv'". There are many more duplicates of this error, but it occurs when the "umathmodule.c" is being compiled. I have tried changing the CFLAGS multiple times with no luck. Python was compiled with uclibc libraries, so could this be the problem? Is there any way we could compile Python and numpy together in one step? I am using Binutils 2.17, GCC 3.4.6, and Python 2.5. Again, python was compiled with uclibc, not the standard libraries. We require the FFT module for a project that is due in about a week. inconsistent dtype promotion in dimensionless arrays

I've noticed two dtype promotion behaviors that are surprising to me. I'm hoping to get people's input as to whether I should file bug tickets on them. First weirdness: When you do an operation between a float32 Numpy array and a python or Numpy float64, the result is a float32 array, not a float64 array: >>> import numpy as N >>> vec32 = N.ones(2, N.float32) >>> vec32 array([ 1., 1.], dtype=float32) >>> result = vec32 - 1.0 >>> result.dtype dtype('float32') >>> result = vec32 - N.float64(1.0) >>> result.dtype dtype('float32') This is of course not the case if the float64 is replaced with a 1-dimensional numpy array: >>> result = vec32 - N.array([1.0], N.float64) >>> result.dtype dtype('float64') Second weirdness: Type promotion doesn't happen if you replace the 1-d, 1-element array with a 0-d array: >>> result = vec32 - N.array(1.0, N.float64) >>> result.dtype dtype('float32') The second weirdness in particular strikes me as inconsistent when compared to operations between vec32 and the 1-d array. I didn't see these listed on the trac site as bugs, but then again a bunch of tickets seem to have been removed/fixed recently. Sorry if these have been mentioned, filed, and fixed already. Otherwise, should I file a ticket on the above behaviors? -- Matt

Identification of neighbouring sites for a periodic numpy array

Hi people, I was wondering if people could give me a pointer or two upon the efficient identification of neighbouring sites for a given point upon a numpy array which has periodic conditions. Suggestions upon the web I've seen seem to use lots of loops which does not seem to be the most economical method. Sorry if this is muppet-ish post! Andy

question about standalone small software and teaching

Hello Dear All, I just have a question for all that uses python/numpy/scipy/matplotlib for making science. I use with no problem in my computer python+numpy+scipy+matplotlib and I'm very satisfied with them. I was a matlab user. I still not have unearthed the power ot python but I'm happy to use a programming language and not a metalanguage. When I gave people my software (in matlab) the all ask me if I could compile and create some interface. I tried to use matlab GUIs, succeded in creating, but then I had a lot of problems. Compiling not always worked. after compiling you have not a workspace and so I had to make all output as txt files... and so on. Now that I use python I'm again with the same problem. I create easy routines (for chemometrics) and then people ask me if I can make a standalone program with interface. I used orange and for NN it's surely one of the best, but I'm not good at programming widgets. Then I think about it, searched the web and didn't find anything. What I'm searching is something similar to labview :) At first I thought ... hey why people wat an interface, just use the console, and then after listening to their reason I have to agree. What do I generally do ? I have a matrix in txt, I apply my routines (a SVD, a PCA, a filter etc etc written in python), plot them (using maplotlib) and then I want an output. that's it. I started looking at various Qt etc. etc. but for me it's overhelming, because I think that the most important part should be dedicate to the routines creation and not to making a gui, compiling, etc. etc. I need simple command like people wants. grids, paste and copy, small working plots :) I mean I can get crazy with setting my program, importing etc. etc. but I also have to say that needs and claim about writing simple guis, common paste and copy etc should be considered from someone there (we wait for the help of some guru that makes things easier ;) thanks for reading the mail Giorgio

numpy-1.0.2 installation error

Hi, I have tried to install numpy-1.0.2 on my SGI (irix6.5) using command "python setup.py install" and received the following error message: File "numpy/core/setup.py", line 48, in generate_config_h raise "ERROR: Failed to test configuration" ERROR: Failed to test configuration What does the message mean? and how to fix it? Hello Gael (numpy friends), I'd love to use Traits and TraitsUI. It looks like a very promising approach. But why is it so difficult to install?
