Critical problem in PyCharm caused by the removal of "--build-dir" in 2020.3

Hi there! I'm a member of the PyCharm team, and we faced a rather critical issue with the release of pip 2020.3 (https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/PY-45712). It turned out that we actually still used the "--build-dir" option in our internal scripts for installing packages through pip, and we completely missed the fact that it was deprecated. To make the matter worse, a few releases back we implemented automatic upgrading of packaging tools in all virtual environments created in the IDE, so now it's impossible to install anything in a new project unless pip is explicitly downgraded first. Judging by how pip now operates regarding building of packages, this option can be safely dropped in our wrappers, but we still need some time to prepare and test patches for a few previous releases and upcoming 2020.3. Is it possible to give us some time to soften the blow for the users? The second question is about the behavior of this option. It appears that we initially started using it because in the past packages were not built in a temporary directory by default. Could you please point me to the exact version of pip where it changed? -- I couldn't find it in a changelog. It would help us decide whether we need to keep some compatibility layer for interpreters with an old version of pip installed. Thanks a lot!

Announcement: pip 20.2 release!

On behalf of the PyPA, I am pleased to announce that we have just released pip 20.2, a new version of pip. You can install it by running python -m pip install --upgrade pip. The highlights for this release are: - The beta of the next-generation dependency resolver is available - Faster installations from wheel files - Improved handling of wheels containing non-ASCII file contents - Faster pip list using parallelized network operations - Installed packages now contain metadata about whether they were directly requested by the user (PEP 376’s REQUESTED file) The new dependency resolver is *off by default* because it is *not yet ready for everyday use*. The new dependency resolver is significantly stricter and more consistent when it receives incompatible instructions, and reduces support for certain kinds of constraints files, so some workarounds and workflows may break. Please test it with the --use-feature=2020-resolver flag. Please see our guide on how to test and migrate, and how to report issues <https://pip.pypa.io/en/latest/user_guide/#changes-to-the-pip-dependency-res…>. We are preparing to change the default dependency resolution behavior and make the new resolver the default in pip 20.3 (in October 2020). This release also partially optimizes pip’s network usage during installation (as part of a Google Summer of Code project by McSinyx <https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/projects/#5428041779511296>). Please test it with pip install --use-feature=fast-deps ... and report bugs to the issue tracker <https://github.com/pypa/pip/issues/new?template=bug-report.md>. Pip update fails

Hello, When I tried to install a package using pip, it informed me that there is a new version available. Per the recommendation, I tried to update pip, but the update failed. The file: c:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Python\Python38\site-packages\pip\_vendor\distlib\t64.exe DOES exist. I just installed the latest python version 3.8.6 – I would have thought it would already include the latest version of pip… Any help resolving this failure will be much appreciated.
