test_import failing

I assume the CVS sources are basicly the same as 2.0c1. Anyhow, test_import is failing on my Debian machine. The script is creating "@test.py" and then trying to import it. "." is not in sys.path for some reason. Neil

test_sre.py fails on Win64 because PyOS_CheckStack *never* fails

I did not follow the discussion a while back regarding the implementation and use of PyOS_CheckStack on Windows. In any case, its use (USE_STACKCHECK) instead of recursion limit checking (USE_RECURSION_LIMIT) in _sre.c results in this test: test(r"""sre.match(r'(x)*', 50000*'x').span()""", (0, 50000), RuntimeError) in test_sre.py failing on Win64. This is because PyOS_CheckStack seem to *never* fail on Win64. Three possibilites: (1) I don't understand the PyOS_CheckStack code or I am misintepreting the problem. (2) The semantics of _alloca() has changed for Win64 such that a stack overflow exception is no longer thrown if space cannot be allocated. NOTE: I changed the number of pointers allocated in PyOS_CheckStack from 2048 to over 1 *Tera*byte and it *still* did not fail. (3) I am stoopid. In any case, I would like to *not* define USE_STACKCHECK on Win64 for the time being (and for 2.0, unless a Win64 angel comes to me in the next couple of days). htmllib.HTMLescape()

I was going to say that this is quite a small change to warrant a PEP - but there are two obvious approaches (working from scratch, or working on top of xml.sax.saxutils.escape - perhaps modifying and relocating that function), so *some* design probably needs to be recorded in a PEP. Application for developer status

May I have developer status on the SourceForge CVS, please? I maintain two standard-library modules (shlex and netrc) and have been involved with the development of several others (including Cmd, smtp, httplib, and multifile). My only immediate plan for what to do with developer access is to add the browser-launch capability previously discussed on this list. My general interest is in improving the standard class library, especially in the areas of Internet-protocol support (urllib, ftp, telnet, pop, imap, smtp, nntplib, etc.) and mini-language toolkits and frameworks (shlex. netrc, Cmd, ConfigParser). If the Internet-protocol support in the library were broken out as a development category, I would be willing to fill the patch-handler slot for it. -- <a href="http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr">Eric S. linuxaudiodev module

I just fixed a number of major bugs in the undocumented linuxaudiodev module. I ended up spending about an hour reading the excellent Open Sound System (OSS) Programmer's Guide to figure out what the module was trying to do and why it wasn't working on my Linux box. After reading the module and the OSS guide, it is clear to me that we need a complete re-write. The module itself is just a wrapper around a bunch of read, write, and ioctl calls. It could all be implemented in pure Python. I propose we develop a Python module for Python 2.1 and call it osslib. There is nothing at all that is Linux-specific about the interface being used. The OSS guide mentions a plethora of platforms that it supports. In the interim, I have fixed some of the most egregious problems. I would appreciate it if Linux users could try out the fixes and the new test case. On my machine it still sounds awful, but at least the sound can be heard. Jeremy

Release candidate

Is there any chance we can get the 'release candidate' released on the SF File Module thingy as well ? Mailman uses this for the betas, for instance, and I think it would attract that bit more attention to it. Tcl and Unicode

The > parsing functions in support of auto-indent weren't expecting Unicode > strings, but text.get() can now return them (although it remains muddy as > to exactly when or why that can happen). Fixed that with a Big Hammer. I apologize, I should have explained when text.get() returns Unicode: Any string returned from Tcl/Tk that contains a byte with the 8th bit set is translated from UTF-8 into Unicode, unless the translation fails (in which case the original raw 8-bit string is returned as a fallback). This *should* be correct because Tcl/Tk always uses UTF-8 internally. (Even though it is "lenient" when receiving strings -- if a sequence of characters has no valid Unicode representation, it appears to falls back to Latin-1; I don't know the details of this algorithm.) --Guido van Rossum (home page: http://www.python.org/~guido/)
