Augmented assignment, update

I've more or less finished the augmented-assignment patch I posted last week. It can be found, including a longish explanation, here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~thomas/python/ (For those who missed it, the previous posting is here: http://www.python.org/pipermail/python-list/2000-June/060680.html The link in the posting, however, points to the new patch.) unicode character name patch status

I was all set to integrate the \N{...} support into the Unicode-escape encoding, and dynamically load the hash table data in on demand, but dynload_aix only cares about module entry points and won't let you specify an explicit function name. Ugh. So, its question and answer time folks: 1) If we can't dynamically load the hash table data, is it that big of a deal? Probably only for WinCE, palm pilot, etc, and they already have patches against CVS. 2) Or, should I just have a separate encoding? I'd prefer to pick option #1 since Perl natively supports the syntax in their strings. The data is all constant read/only data that will be mmapped directly from the binary, so it only effects working set if the feature is used. Barry, Greg, Guido? The only feedback I got last time I submitted the patch was from MAL, it'd help if some other folks would comment on it. Thanks, Bill

Can starship please have its front page back?

I'm not sure if I should ask this here, but I've tried crew@starship and comp.lang.python, so forgive me please. There are links all over the place (eg. python.org, oriellynet) to "http://starship.python.net/", which currently gets the gentle browsing newbie a rather forbidding, somewhat out-of-date status page. I don't really think this gives a good impression. Particularly as said page is no longer on the machine that had the hard disc failure... Cheers, M.

It would suffice, but it'd be less efficient (and more work) since I'd then have to access the data/hash functions through the normal PyObject mechanisms instead of directly as C functions. That is, I'm trying to avoid creating a PyString of whatever is inside the braces. (\N{SMILEY}). Then again, maybe I'm just being too performance sensitive. The import mechanism got redone weirdly, all of the ways of doing dynamic loading except AIX encode the idea that the function name must be preceeded by "init". Dynload_xxx.c is the wrong place to put that requirement. Whomever calls _PyImport_GetDynLoadFunc() should handle that issue. Just as an FYI, the only problem I've found so far with my last patch was wrt handling Unicode characters with values in the UCS-4 code space. (Not that there are any yet, but the code must handle that case anyway, sine I don't want to have to go change it later.) Bill
