Empty keyword

Hi all, It miht sound stupid or useless, or maybe someone has already mentioned it but sometimes I wish Python could provdie an "Empty" keyword like The "None" one. It would be usefull to validdate the emptyness of any scalar or sequence in an uniform way instead of using things such as : if len(mylist) == 0: which I really dislike. It makes in my head but it might be stupid. Thanks for your feedback. - Sylvain

Side by Side Differencing Patch

Tim, A while back I submitted a Python patch (#914575) for the difflib.py module and the diff.py utility script to add support for generating side by side differences. It was intended to be used for generating HTML pages but is generic where it can be used for other types of markup. 1) Is this worthwhile functionality where it would be worth including it and supporting it in Python? 2) What can I do to help evolve it, prove its worth and get this patch on the road for inclusion in Python? The patch was designed to not interfere or duplicate existing code (it uses the output of the ndiff iterator) and I believe is very maintainable code. I initially wrote it for showing log differences in HTML test reports (personal project) but have also found it useful at work for supplementing Doxygen documentation with source differences and also a utility script which generates an HTML report of all the source differences between two builds. In addition I've set up CVS to use it so that I have frequent exposure to the results of my algorithms to make sure I never see quirks. creating factory methods in C extension modules.

I'm creating an C extension module that returns one of my C-defined python classes from a factory function. is it correct to simple have the factory function allocate and init the object by calling the functions I defined and set as tp_new and tp_init in the PyTypeObject? If not am I supposed to use PyObject_New and PyObject_Init or something? Cherrs, -P

undocumented api functions

Every so often, when writing C extensions, or embedding Python, I encounter api functions which seem to be useful, but they are undocumented. I brought the Doc/tools/undoc_symbols.py script up to date - this uses ctags to find function declarations, macro definitions and typedefs, then looks through the .tex files whether they are mentioned or not. Currently, for CVS head, it finds 239 undocumented function prototypes. Probably most of them should better stay undocumented and unused by extension writers, but several are really useful like these random picks: PySys_SetPath PyGILState_* PyOS_snprintf First I thought I write docs for some of them myself and submit patches or check them in directly, but maybe a more organized way would be better. Int/long future warning (again)

Not to dredge up a thread from 1.5 years ago, but I guess I will.. :-) Did anyone actually implement a __future__ import or SOMETHING to disable the annoying "FutureWarning: hex/oct constants > sys.maxint will return positive values in Python 2.4 and up". There was some discussion that there should be a way to suppress this message before 2.3 went out the door, but I don't see any indications on the mailing list (or in the code) that there's any way to suppress the message. -- Nick

Dropping decorator syntax for 2.4?

Anthony's updates to PEP 320 (the 2.4 release schedule) reminded me that I still haven't decided on the decorator syntax. I still hate the most popular proposal (def foo(args) [decorators]: body) and my own proposal is unpopular. I just saw the Java metadata syntax again and want to think about being inspired by that instead of by the C# syntax. On the plus side, Java's @name(kwargs) syntax allows us to put decorators in front methods and classes without ambiguous syntax; on the minus side, using up a potential operator character for one specific purpose should not be done lightly. But I don't want to get too deep into this discussion -- I just want to suggest that we put this off and get 2.4 on the road without any decorator syntax at all. What do people think of that?
