One thought jumped out though. The macro assumes that the enclosing function has consistent with the use of the variable names "visit" and "arg": static int islice_traverse(isliceobject *lz, visitproc visit, void *arg) { Py_VISIT(lz->it); return 0; } If the parameters are named something else ("vfunc" for example), MSVC++6.0 complains: C:\py24\Modules\itertoolsmodule.c(1118) : warning C4013: 'visit' undefined; assuming extern returning int Don't know if it is worth it, but you could safeguard the macro by including visit and arg in the parameter list. _bsddb too unstable?

I just wasted some time chasing down being unable to run the Python test suite because the test_anydbm tests were segfaulting. Removing the _bsddb module allowed the tests to run without segfaulting. (FWIW, I'm running on Fedora Core 1, with db4-4.1.25-14) I get the impression that this is a common problem. Berkeley DB APIs often change in non-backward compatable ways that cause this sort of problem. Perhaps these APIs change too rapidly to allow the _bsddb extension to be included in the distribution. I assume that this is the fault of the Berkeley DB libraries, and not the extension, but I don't really know. :/ Jim -- Jim Fulton mailto:jim@zope.com Python Powered! test__locale weirdness

Brett and I spent the better part of the evening (and my morning) trying to figure out what's making test__locale fail on MacOS X. The test has been failing since the changes made in Modules/_localemodule.c revision 2.46. These changes caused nl_langinfo() to return the correct value for RADIXCHAR (among others), which it wasn't doing before. However, now nl_langinfo(RADIXCHAR) and localeconv()['decimal_point'] don't agree: Take 'fr_FR' for example: _localemodule.c:2.45: >>> setlocale(LC_NUMERIC, 'fr_FR') 'fr_FR' >>> nl_langinfo(RADIXCHAR) '.' >>> localeconv()['decimal_point'] '.' _localemodule.c:2.46: >>> setlocale(LC_NUMERIC, 'fr_FR') 'fr_FR' >>> nl_langinfo(RADIXCHAR) ',' >>> localeconv()['decimal_point'] '.' The changes made in 2.46 are closer to correct than 2.45, but we don't understand how localeconv() is incorrect. If you stop in PyLocale_localeconv in the debugger, you can see that the locale is indeed set to 'fr_FR', but localeconv() has decimal_point as '.', not comma. Regression tests

This is my first time doing the regression tests after an installation, and I have some questions: - It gave me a lot of skipped: 42 tests skipped: test__locale test_aepack test_al test_applesingle test_bsddb185 test_cd test_cl test_codecmaps_cn test_codecmaps_jp test_codecmaps_kr test_codecmaps_tw test_commands test_crypt test_curses test_dbm test_dl test_fcntl test_fork1 test_gdbm test_gl test_grp test_imgfile test_ioctl test_linuxaudiodev test_macfs test_macostools test_mhlib test_mpz test_nis test_normalization test_openpty test_ossaudiodev test_plistlib test_poll test_posix test_pty test_pwd test_resource test_scriptpackages test_signal test_sunaudiodev test_timing Those skips are all expected on win32. As long these are all expected to skip, shouldn't they not be tested in -uall mode? - It gave me some failed: 6 tests failed: test_cfgparser test_decimal test_socket_ssl test_timeout test_urllib2 test_urllibnet What should I do with these? I'll certainly take a look at test_decimal, but with the others? Inform them here? Open bugs? Thank you! Can we please have a better dict interpolation syntax?

I have just had the experience of writing a bunch of expressions of the form "create index %(table)s_lid1_idx on %(table)s(%(lid1)s)" % params and found myself getting quite confused by all the parentheses and "s" suffixes. I would *really* like to be able to write this as "create index %{table}_lid1_idx on %{table}(%{lid1})" % params which I find to be much easier on the eyes. PEP 292 - simpler string substitutions

PEP 292 describes simpler string substitutions, i.e. $-strings. PEP 320 says that this is going into Python 2.4. I've had some code laying around that implemented $-strings as a subclass of unicode instead of what PEP 292 describes as a new string method. The advantage to this approach is that the feature is provided with no language changes, or changes to the existing string classes. I've cleaned up my code and posted a patch to SF. I've also checked in an updated PEP 292 that fits my implementation more closely. Please review the PEP and the patch: http://www.python.org/peps/pep-0292.html The reference implementation in the patch adds a couple of extra things that aren't part of the PEP, but were discussed at Monday's sprint. Specifically: - a top level package called 'stringlib' is added to the standard library. - the dstring class implemented PEP 292 is available through stringlib.dstring - some handy dict subclasses that work with the dstring class are also provided. The idea was that some of the constants and functions we want to keep from the string module would go in the stringlib package. That's not essential to the PEP of course. If this stuff is approved for Python 2.4, I'll add test cases and documentation. -Barry

test_pwd is really slow

I've been having trouble running the tests lately, because test_pwd is really slow. It's a fairly trivial set of tests -- checking the types of return values and cross-checking getpwall() vs. getpwnam()/getpwuid(). The problem is if your password database is provided by LDAP and is really big, the test takes an impractically long time. Would anyone object if I changed the test suite to require some resource to run test_pwd? Or should I just make some local change to disable it? Jeremy

Hi, I've succeeded in getting the perl module Inline::Python to work with new-style classes, but it seems kind of clunky and I'm wonding if someone can tell me if I'm doing this "the right way" (TM). If I've missed something, please point it out, since it is very hard to search the documentation for information about "type objects." Some background: The Inline modules allow us to extend Perl using various languages without going through XS. Essentially, the code from the other language is embedded in some C code which is a Perl extension. But, we need to be able to translate the data-types from Python to Perl through C, including creating entries in Perl's symbol table so that Python instances can be returned to the Perl code and then used to call the methods as if they were Perl subroutines. For starters, I'm working from Neil Watkiss's code http://search.cpan.org/CPAN/authors/id/N/NE/NEILW/Inline-Python-0.20.tar.gz From there, I checked the original into my subversion server. There have been quite a few whitespace changes, so if you have subversion, an svn diff would be a good way to see the changes. So, is PyInstance_Check() supposed to work, or is there some PyFoo_Check() function that will work? It seems really wrong to have to add-up all of the other types and use this process of elimination to identify a new-style class instance. Also, it seems that it would fail if a class inherited from a built-in type. I'm almost sure that I'm way off-course, so if anyone could put me on track, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks, Eric

the new profiler and profiling c calls

I think there's a slight problem with the profiling of C calls in the new profiler. When profiling method calls, the C function name is the repr() of the method, which means that a call for instance on str.endswith on different string instances ends up as completely separate calls. This might be intentional, but it's different than the way Python code is profiled, and it's irritating. Testing if a thousand different lines ends in a certain way means the default output from profile gets another thousand lines. I don't really think that's how it should be.

urllib.urlretrieve() and handling 550 errors when reading from FTP

Bug #635453 reports that when you use urllib.urlretrieve() to read from an FTP server and the file you are trying to get does not have the proper permissions for you, you are given a listing of the directory instead of an exception (this is all done by Lib/urllib.py:752). Now this doesn't make sense to me and I suspect most people would agree. But having that explicit line there on top of it having been in the file since it was renamed from urlopen way backin 1994 makes me hesitate before I delete the line. Anyone have issues if I ditch the line so an exception is raised instead of getting a directory listing instead? -Brett

Comparison and (user) confusion

Hi, people. Yesterday, as a user, I made a little bug which I quickly resolved, but over which I could have spent some time, having been younger to Python. The problem appeared when I sub-classed `list', and used a `__cmp__' method in my sub-type to effect a specialised sort. The sort did not behave as expected, as the `list' type provides rich comparisons, and that `sort', finding `__lt__', merely ignored my own `__cmp__'. I wonder if Python could not have helped better here, by diagnosing a possible comparison confusion while creating the sub-class. I do not know much know Python internals, but if C slots happen to be used for comparison methods, it might not be so unreasonable to expect such confusion to be detected whenever those slots are filled. I presume here, maybe wrongly, that it does not make good sense mixing rich and non-rich comparisons in the same class. Just a thought. :-) P.S. - Of course, replacing `__cmp__' by `__lt__' solved my problem. Bug day outcome

The bug day ended up closing 15 bugs and 18 patches. Thanks to everyone who participated. A few python-dev people were around for much of the day; in particular Brett Cannon was really helpful in processing bugs and keeping the Wiki page updated. Anthony has said he expects an alpha2 in three weeks or so. That puts the next release around July 29th. I suggest Saturday, August 7th as the next bug day. (Or would Sunday be better for people?) --amk
