Hello All, I am interested in participating GSoC 2014. I have went through last year's eligibility criterion, I think I am qualified to participate. I know GSoC 2014 still has more than 2-3 months, however I would like to start early. Please let me know suggestions. After going through GSoC 2013 page (https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/2013), I think I would be interested in Core Python or PyPy. Please let me know how should I start. How long the wrong type of argument should we limit (or not) in the error message (C-api)?

Greetings, When fixing/adding error message for wrong type of argument in C code, I am always confused, how long the wrong type is the ideal? The type of error message that I am talking about: "Blabla() argument 1 must be integer not wrong_type". We have inconsistency in CPython code, for example: Python/sysmodule.c =============== PyErr_Format(PyExc_TypeError, "can't intern %.400s", s->ob_type->tp_name); Modules/_json.c ============ PyErr_Format(PyExc_TypeError, "first argument must be a string, not %.80s", Py_TYPE(pystr)->tp_name); Objects/typeobject.c =============== PyErr_Format(PyExc_TypeError, "can only assign string to %s.__name__, not '%s'", type->tp_name, Py_TYPE(value)->tp_name); So is it %.400s or %.80s or %s? I vote for %s. Other thing is which one is more preferable? Py_TYPE(value)->tp_name or value->ob_type->tp_name? I vote for Py_TYPE(value)->tp_name. Or this is just a matter of taste? Thank you. cffi in stdlib

Hello. I would like to discuss on the language summit a potential inclusion of cffi[1] into stdlib. This is a project Armin Rigo has been working for a while, with some input from other developers. It seems that the main reason why people would prefer ctypes over cffi these days is "because it's included in stdlib", which is not generally the reason I would like to hear. Our calls to not use C extensions and to use an FFI instead has seen very limited success with ctypes and quite a lot more since cffi got released. The API is fairly stable right now with minor changes going in and it'll definitely stablize until Python 3.4 release. Notable projects using it: * pypycore - gevent main loop ported to cffi * pgsql2cffi * sdl-cffi bindings * tls-cffi bindings * lxml-cffi port * pyzmq * cairo-cffi * a bunch of others So relatively a lot given that the project is not even a year old (it got 0.1 release in June). As per documentation, the advantages over ctypes: * The goal is to call C code from Python. You should be able to do so without learning a 3rd language: every alternative requires you to learn their own language (Cython, SWIG) or API (ctypes). So we tried to assume that you know Python and C and minimize the extra bits of API that you need to learn. * Keep all the Python-related logic in Python so that you don’t need to write much C code (unlike CPython native C extensions). * Work either at the level of the ABI (Application Binary Interface) or the API (Application Programming Interface). Usually, C libraries have a specified C API but often not an ABI (e.g. they may document a “struct” as having at least these fields, but maybe more). (ctypes works at the ABI level, whereas Cython and native C extensions work at the API level.) * We try to be complete. For now some C99 constructs are not supported, but all C89 should be, including macros (and including macro “abuses”, which you can manually wrap in saner-looking C functions). * We attempt to support both PyPy and CPython, with a reasonable path for other Python implementations like IronPython and Jython. * Note that this project is not about embedding executable C code in Python, unlike Weave. This is about calling existing C libraries from Python. so among other things, making a cffi extension gives you the same level of security as writing C (and unlike ctypes) and brings quite a bit more flexibility (API vs ABI issue) that let's you wrap arbitrary libraries, even those full of macros. I've successfully embedded Python for a single thread I tried to extend the implementation for multiple threads (a worker thread scenario) and I'm encountering either deadlocks or seg faults depending upon how I got about it. If a main thread does things like importing a module and obtaining a reference to a Python method, can those things be used by other C++ threads or do they have to repeat those lookups? Is there any logic that needs to be executed once only as each thread is started? (the doc suggests just PyGILState_Ensure/PyGILState_Release each time a thread accesses Python methods - is there anything else?) Given the bug 19576, what is the most portable way to code this to work reliably on unfixed Python versions? (e.g. should users always explicitly call PyEval_InitThreads() in their main thread or worker threads or both?) Default SIGINT handling dangerous?

Hi all. Is there any way to disable the default asynchronous exception raising SIGINT signal handling? Or a plan to add support for this? My searches on the net found several bug reports and discussions regarding this, but nothing seems final... :-( I believe the current Python default SIGINT handling by raising an asynchronous KeyboardInterrupt exception is dangerous, and can directly cause Python interpreter crashes even if no user code is involved, or any sort of other 'undefined behaviour' if it is. On Windows at least (using Python 3.3.3 at the moment, but seen with earlier versions as well), I occasionally get 'python.exe has stopped working' dialogs when Ctrl-C is pressed (most often if pressed during Python's initialization - loading site.py or earlier). The problem with asynchronous exceptions is, of course, that they can occur at _any_ time, even at the start of a finally: block, effectively causing cleanup code to be skipped even though the programmer intended it to be called even in case of exceptions. My scripts replace the default SIGINT/SIGBREAK signal handlers as soon as possible, and everything works great after that, but things get ugly if Ctrl-C is pressed before the script gets a chance to do this. I could even live with an 'exit with an ugly traceback', but having the process hang or fail so that Windows reports it as non-responding or reports it as 'stopped working' and offers to send failure information to Microsoft? That just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. :-( Also, Python documentation should not helpfully state or infer in several places that user can handle KeyboardInterrupt exceptions to implement Ctrl-C handling. Even if you do manage to catch it, you must never ever ignore it and must terminate your application since it might have already been left in an inconsistent state internally (e.g. some important finally clause got skipped, even one located deep in the Python standard library internals). Doing anything else can only be considered a partially working hack. Another problem is that that multiple SIGINT signals might occur in a sequence and any such KeyboardInterrupt handling can itself be interrupted in the same way as the original code. You can say that this is 'unlikely', or even add additional code to make this even more unlikely, but it still smells bad. :-( Hope this helps.
