Hello all, The updated PEP 448 (https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0448/) is implemented now based on some early work by Thomas Wouters (in 2008) and Florian Hahn (2013) and recently completed by Joshua Landau and me. The issue tracker http://bugs.python.org/issue2292 has a working patch. Would someone be able to review it? Thank you very much, Neil

Encoding of PyFrameObject members

I need to access frame members from within a signal handler for tracing purpose. My first attempt to access co_filename was like this (omitting error checking): PyFrameObject *frame = PyEval_GetFrame(); PyObject *ob = PyUnicode_AsUTF8String(frame->f_code->co_filename) char *str = PyBytes_AsString(ob) However, the function PyUnicode_AsUTF8String() calls PyObject_Malloc(), which is not reentrant. If the signal handler nest over PyObject_Malloc(), it causes a segfault, and it could also deadlock. Instead, I access members directly: char *str = PyUnicode_DATA(frame->f_code->co_filename); size_t len = PyUnicode_GET_DATA_SIZE(frame->f_code->co_filename); Is it safe to assume that unicode objects co_filename and co_name are always UTF-8 data for loaded code? I looked at the PyTokenizer_FromString() and it seems to convert everything to UTF-8 upfront, and I would like to make sure this assumption is valid. Thanks! Francis

Import Fails in setup.py On Android

After fixing a segfault issue (many thanks Ryan) I'm back to the same issue I was having with Python 2.7.8; the newly built python throws an undefined reference to dlopen when running setup.py...specifically when importing just-built extensions I've managed to narrow the problem down to the following line: importlib._bootstrap._SpecMethods(spec).load() Googling this brings up a few hits from bugs.python.org and not much else. Now we plan to introduce Python as the new programming language to our customer. When I try to build the python 3.4.1 on Red Hat Linux platform. I found some problem and need help. After I run configure and make the python, at the very end, it said some optional modules we missing, Python build finished successfully! The necessary bits to build these optional modules were not found: _bz2 _lzma _ssl _tkinter zlib So, I went to python development guide site and found out I have to download some other source to build the optional modules. Since I am on RH Linux and yum is installed on my Linux box, so I run following command # yum install yum-utils Loaded plugins: product-id, refresh-packagekit, security, subscription-manager This system is not registered to Red Hat Subscription Management. Python Mobile-sig

There is now a Python SIG dedicated to running Python on mobile devices. Sign up for the mobile-sig(a)python.org mailing list and find out more at [1]. The Mobile-SIG exists to improve the usability of Python on mobile devices, as mobile platforms have their own unique requirements and constraints. There are two goals: * To collaborate on porting CPython to mobile platforms and ensure that other Python implementations (i.e. Jython, IronPython) present much the same environment as CPython when running on mobile devices. * To collaborate on the design of modules for mobile-centric features such as cameras, GPS, accelerometers, and other sensors to ensure cross-platform and cross-implementation compatibility. Workflow PEP proposals are now closed

The PEPs under consideration are PEPs 474 <https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0474/> and 462 <https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0462/> from Nick Coghlan to use Kallithea and do self-hosting, and PEP 481 <https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0481/> from Donald Stufft that proposes using GitHub. At this point I expect final PEPs by PyCon US so I can try and make a decision by May 1. Longer still is to hopefully have whatever solution we choose in place right after Python 3.5 is released. And just a reminder to people, the lofty goal is to improve the overall workflow for CPython itself such that our patch submission queue can actually be cleared regularly. This not only benefits core devs by letting us be more effective, but also contributors by making sure their hard work gets addressed quickly and thus doesn't languish on the issue tracker for very long. If we can't find a solution for fixing our CPython workflow I will then be willing to entertain these PEPs narrowing their scopes and only focus on ancillary repos like the devguide, etc. where the workflows are simple. I know the absolute worst case is nothing changes, but honestly I think the worst case is Nick's work gets us off of Rietveld, the ancillary repos move to GitHub, and we make the GitHub and Bitbucket mirrors of CPython official ones for people to work from (bonus points if we get the issue tracker to have push button patch pulling from GitHub; Bitbucket is already covered thanks to our remote hg repo support). IOW I see nothing but a win for contributors and core devs as well as everyone proposing solutions which is a nice place to start from. =)

PEP 484 syntax: NONONONONONONO!

The proposed syntax is abominable. It's the opposite of readable. The function annotation syntax is ugly, but potentially useful for things like documentation. While it may very well have been created with the idea of type-checking, actually using it for such quickly turns into an unreadable morass of information that is far more difficult for human brains to parse, which makes this usage the antithesis of pythonic. I much prefer the idea of a 'where' keyword to denote typing, as discussed http://aroberge.blogspot.com/2015/01/type-hinting-in-python-focus-on.html, but I think a refinement of their idea would prove even better: def retry(callback, timeout, retries=None) where ........callback is Callable[AnyArgs, Any[int, None]], ........timeout is Any[int, None], ........retries is in [int, None], # 'is in' construct is more readable, dunno about complexity ........return is None: ....pass def greeting(name) where name is str, return is str: ....return 'Hello ' + name x, y = [], [] where x, y is List[Employee], List[Manager] To me, this orders of magnitude more readable than the proposed nonsense. PS. Obviously the 8-space indent above would only a convention, not requirement.
