Windows amd64 warnings

There are many warnings from the trunk (and 2.5) builds on Win64. I suspect quite a few of these are real problems. Win64 is the most unusual platform wrt 64-bits due to long being 32-bit. If we need 64-bits, we need to use Py_ssize_t. IIRC, we've had some bug reports for Win64. I know I've fixed some problems found in py3k. It would be great if someone could create a patch to fix the warnings. Overflow on enumerate() and itertools.count()

For Py2.6, I fixed a long standing irritant where the count raised an OverflowError when it reached LONG_MAX. If you guys agree that is a bug fix, I'll backport it to Py2.5. Raymond

resurrected modindex

A long time ago I wrote a redirector to note and display the most frequently requested modules from the library reference manual's global module index. When Georg Brandl did his massive rewrite of the Python manuals that broke. I finally took the time this evening to resurrect that function. Deadlock by a second import in a thread

Hi! I was looking to this bug: http://bugs.python.org/issue1255 It basically creates a deadlock in Python by doing the following: - aa.py imports bb.py - bb.py imports time and generates a thread - the thread uses time.strptime The deadlock is because the strptime function imports another module, line 517 of timemodule.c: PyObject *strptime_module = PyImport_ImportModule("_strptime"); This situation is well known, found a lot of references to this import-thread-import problem in discussions and previous bugs (i.e.: http://bugs.python.org/issue683658). I come from a corporate IT background working as a drone in large businesses, starting about 30 years ago (argh!). I come from an IBM mainframe background, but with constant exposure and interfaces with other platforms, and writing code with a variety of languages and scripting languages throughout my career. I recently completed a very long and painful transition to becoming at least a part time Java developer. For the past several years I have had a background conversation with myself on the topic of the Perfect Programming Language; what would it look like/feel like. Then I stumbled on Python, and I am totally hooked. I gather this experience is similar to others who are now Python advocates, who are using Python for their personal projects, etc. In the short term, though, for the corporate world, it'll probably be an uphill battle to have major projects developed in Python (or even Jython, which would be the logical choice for a transition out of j2ee to the lamp world). There is some amount of resistance to open source software. The same resistance to linux was overcome by 'respectable' companies supporting and interacting on a corporate level, like Red Hat. IBM certainly helped there, too, like it or not. Python would probably do well to have similar corporate advocates, but that would be an expensive and risky business proposition. Short term, I wouldn't expect to be able to make a big paycheck out of Python. As time goes on and the younger programmers who are using Python on their personal and open source projects get into positions of influence in the corporate world that will change. I agree with you that the OP shouldn't be doing that, but note that the main problem arises here because it's completely unpredictable the import in strptime for an external user. Do you recommend to close the bug as "won't fix" saying something like... The deadlock happens because strptime has an import inside it, and recursive imports are not allowed in different threads. As a general rule and good coding style, don't run your code when the module is imported, but put it in a function like "main" in the second file, import it and call it from the first one. This will solve your problem. Note that this happens to you with strptime, but could happen with a lot of functions that do this internal import of something else. So, you'll never be sure.
