Hey, As part of pickle4, I found it interesting to add the possibility of pickling bound functions (instance methods). This is done by pickling f.__self__ and f.__func__ separately, and then adding a BIND opcode to tie them together. While this appears to work fine for python methods (non-builtin), some issues arise with builtins. These are partly caused because not all builtin function types support __func__, partly because not all of them fill __module__ when they should and partly because there are many (7) types a function can actually have: ClassMethodDescriptorType = type(??) BuiltinFunctionType = type(len) FunctionType = type(f) MethodType = type(A().f()) MethodDescriptorType = type(list.append) WrapperDescriptorType = type(list.__add__) MethodWrapperType = type([].__add__) AllFunctionTypes = (ClassMethodDescriptorType, BuiltinFunctionType, FunctionType, MethodType, MethodDescriptorType, WrapperDescriptorType, MethodWrapperType) repr(AllFunctionTypes) = ( <class 'classmethod_descriptor'>, <class 'builtin_function_or_method'>, <class 'function'>, <class 'method'>, <class 'method_descriptor'>, <class 'wrapper_descriptor'>, <class 'method-wrapper'>) I have created a patch at [1], which adds __func__ to some other function types, as well as: 1) adds AllFunctionTypes etc. to Lib/types.py 2) inspect.isanyfunction(), inspect.isanyboundfunction(), inspect.isanyunboundfunction() 3) functools.unbind Note that I am not knowledgeable of cpython internals and therefore the patch needs to be carefully reviewed. Possible issues: Should classmethods be considered bound or unbound? If cm is a classmethod, then should cm.__func__.__self__ = cm.__self__ or cm.__func__.__self__ = None? Currently does the latter: >>> cm.__self__, hasattr(cm,'__self__'), hasattr(cm.__func__, '__self__') (<class '__main__.A'>, True, False) This requires treating classmethods separately when pickling, so I'm not sure if this is ideal. Use function names instead of functions for os.supports_dir_fd?

Hi, Python 3.3 introduced os.supports_dir_fd to check if some os functions do accept a file descriptor instead of a path. The problem is that os.supports_dir_fd is a list of functions, not a list of function names. If os functions are monkey patched, you cannot test anymore if a function supports file descriptor. Monkey patching is a common practice in Python. test_os.py replaces os.exec*() functions temporary for example. It's also inconsistent with the new time.get_clock_info() function which expects the name of a time function, not the function directly. Victor

Why is inspect.getmoduleinfo() deprecated? Is it just to remove circular dependencies? PyBytes_Join

Hi, PyUnicode_Join is a public C API function. However, its cousin for the bytes object is tucked privately in Objects/bytesobject.c as _PyBytes_Join. Is there any harm in exposing it publicly? Eli

io.BytesIO slower than monkey-patching io.RawIOBase

While working on #1767933, Serhiy came up with an observation that "monkey-patching" one of the base classes of io is faster than using BytesIO when in need of a file-like object for writing into. I've distilled it into this standalone test: import io data = [b'a'*10, b'bb'*5, b'ccc'*5] * 10000 def withbytesio(): bio = io.BytesIO() for i in data: bio.write(i) return bio.getvalue() def monkeypatching(): mydata = [] file = io.RawIOBase() file.writable = lambda: True file.write = mydata.append for i in data: file.write(i) return b''.join(mydata) The second approach is consistently 10-20% faster than the first one (depending on input) for trunk Python 3.3 Is there any reason for this to be so? What does BytesIO give us that the second approach does not (I tried adding more methods to the patched RawIOBase to make it more functional, like seekable() and tell(), and it doesn't affect performance)? This also raises a "moral" question - should I be using the second approach deep inside the stdlib (ET.tostring) just because it's faster? Eli

early startup error reporting failure

Hi there. I've been busy taking the current beta candidate and merging it into the stackless repo. As expected, things don't just go smoothly and there are the usual startup errors, this being a rather intrusive patch and all that. However, I found that early startup errors were not being reported correctly, so I had do make some changes to fix that. I'm not sure these are the correct fixes, so I'd like to start this here and see if anyone feels responsible. Right: The initial error occurs here: if (PyImport_ImportFrozenModule("_frozen_importlib") <= 0) { Py_FatalError("Py_Initialize: can't import _frozen_importlib"); My problem was that the actual exception was not being reported along with the FatalError message. Digging around a bit, I found the cause here: fileobject.c, PyFile_WriteString() } else if (!PyErr_Occurred()) { That is, this function declines to write anything if there is an exception present. My quick and dirty fix was to remove this test and just print even with a present exception. That fixes the issue. The source line output is a "bonus" feature anyway and we shouldn't, IMHO, fail outputting tracebacks if we cannot read the code. The actual failure was importing the IO library. Perhaps an alternative fix, then, is to fix the _Py_DisplaySourceLine() so that it deals with failure to import IO in the same way as failure to read the file, i.e. just returns a "success" value of 0. With these changes, I was able to successfully output the error. Hopefully I will be able to debug it too :) Any thoughts?
