type(obj) vs. obj.__class__

In a recent tracker issue about OrderedDict [1] we've had some discussion about the use of type(od) as a replacement for od.__class__. It came up because the pure Python implementation of OrderedDict uses self.__class__ in 3 different methods (__repr__, __reduce__, and copy). The patch in that issue changes the C implementation to use Py_TYPE(). [2] So I wanted to get some feedback on the practical implications of such a change and if we need to clarify the difference more formally. In this specific case [3] there are 3 questions: * Should __repr__() for a stdlib class use type(self).__name__ or self.__class__.__name__? * Should __reduce__() return type(self) or self.__class__? * Should copy() use type(self) or self.__class__? The more general question of when we use type(obj) vs. obj.__class__ applies to both the language and to all the stdlib as I expect consistency there would result in fewer surprises. I realize that there are some places where using obj.__class__ makes more sense (e.g. for some proxy support). There are other places where using type(obj) is the way to go (e.g. special method lookup). However, the difference is muddled enough that usage is inconsistent in the stdlib. For example, C-implemented types use Py_TYPE() almost exclusively. So, would it make sense to establish some concrete guidelines about when to use type(obj) vs. obj.__class__? If so, what would those be? Conversion of a standard unicode string to a bit string in Python

Hi All, I'm currently programming a set of crypto challenges in order to get a deeper understanding of python and crypto. The problem is to break a repeating key xor data (in a file). In order to do that I need a function to calculate the hamming distance between two strings. To find that one needs to find the differing number of *bits* in a string. Any ideas on how to manipulate the string at bit level? This is my first time in writing a question to the mailing list so please let me know anything that I need to keep in mind while asking questions. Thanks in advance. Gracias Nemo

Hi All, I'm having trouble with some python processes that are using 3GB+ of memory but when I inspect them with either heapy or meliae, injected via pyrasite, those tools only report total memory usage to be 119Mb. This feels like the old "python high water mark" problem, but I thought that was fixed in 2.6/3.0? Rationale behind lazy map/filter

Hey guys, Could someone clarify for me why it is a good idea to have map return an iterator that is iterable multiple times and acts as an empty iterator in subsequent iterations? > r = range(10) > list(r) == list(r) True > a=map(lambda x:x+1, [1,2,3]) > list(a) == list(a) False Wouldn't it be safer for everyone if attempting to traverse some map iterator a second time would just throw a runtime error rather than act as an empty iterator? Or am I missing something obvious? I understand that chaining functional operators like map/reduce/filter is fairly common and not materializing intermediate computation can improve performance in some cases (or even turn infinite into finite computation), but I also find myself running into non-obvious bugs because of this. Maybe it's just python2 habits, but I assume I'm not the only one carelessly thinking that "iterating over an input a second time will result in the same thing as the first time (or raise an error)". What would you say is a good practice to avoid accidentally passing the result of a map to a function traversing its inputs multiple times? I assume there needs to be an agreement on these things for larger codebases. Should the caller always materialize the result of a map before passing it elsewhere? Or should the callee always materialize its inputs before using them? Or should we just document whether the function traverses its input only once, such as through some type annotation ("def f(x: TraversableOnce[T]")? If we refactor `f' such that it used to traverse `x' only once, but now traverses it twice, should we go and update all callers? Would type hints solve this? More obvious assumption errors, such as "has a method called __len__" throw a runtime error thanks to duck typing, but more subtle ones, such as this one, are harder to express. Thanks, Stefan

There was a discussion a while ago about python 3 and the attitude on social media and there was a lack of examples. Here is one example: https://www.reddit.com/r/Python/comments/3nl5ut/ninite_the_popular_website_… According to some people, it is everybodys job to promote python 3 and force people to upgrade. This is really not something I enjoy (people telling me pypy should promote python 3 - it's not really our job). Now I sometimes feel that there is not enough sentiment in python-dev to distance from such ideas. It *is* python-dev job to promote python3, but it's also python-dev job sometimes to point out that whatever helps in promoting the python ecosystem (e.g. in case of pypy is speed) is a good enough reason to do those things. On python-list, Chris Warrick reported (thread title): "The Nikola project is deprecating Python 2.7 (+2.x/3.x user survey results)" This is for the November release, with 2.7 dropped in the next version next year. (Nikola is a cross-platform unicode-based app for building static websites and blogs from user-written templates and (marked-up) text files. https://getnikola.com/ ) Since users do not write code to use Nikola, the survey was about installation of Python 3. At present, 1/2 have 3.x only, 1/3 2.x only, and 1/6 both. (So much for 'nobody uses 3.x for real work'.)
