userdatabases

Hi, I know this subject has been touched before... but I was wondering if anybody has yet implemented some system where mailman is used next to a userdatabase where every subscriber is linked somehow to a user in that database. There are probably 1001 ways to synchronize mailman subscribers with an external user database, but the problem is finding the best solution. At this moment our programmers have several projects where announce mail lists are going to be needed, but of course customers want to have more details for every subscriber than just their email address. I've been pushing them to use mailman and I've been successfull so far, but we still haven't come up with a solution for the problem above... My job-description doesn't officially include programming :) but I'm willing to invest some of my own time in creating some standard solution for this which I could contribute back to mailman... So if anybody has any ideas... please let me know! Ricardo. --

Hello, I have noticed another change between 1.1 and 2.0beta2... on a closed list when the list admin approves someones subscription, he doesn't get an email notification of the subscription -- Madarasz Gergely gorgo(a)caesar.elte.hu gorgo(a)linux.rulez.org It's practically impossible to look at a penguin and feel angry. Multilingual support

I've downloaded Mailman-2.0b2 and I'v translated the templates files to spanish, but it wasn't enough. Some web pages appears with english and spanish words. Are there some language support on mind? an issue with the listinfo/<listname> page...

I was working upgrading to the latest CVS tonight, and realized there's a problem with the list page put up when you go to .../listinfo/listname. that's the URL used when someone wants to access the list or subscribe to it, but there's no link there that allows a user to log on and change their subscription option. that's a different URL (../listinfo/listname/emailaddr) that's sent to them when they subscribe, but you can't assume they'll save that (in fact, you can guarantee most of them won't), so the user dead-ends trying to get into the web site to try to change their options. There really needs to be a way, both on the listinfo/ page and the listinfo/listname page, for an existing subscriber to sign in and get to their subscription configuration page. Otherwise, people are going to get lost and end up annoying the admin for help... I think it happened again..... Instead, it went out twice. When I saw this, I cleaned all the files related to kcc-news list in the qfile/ dir. This stopped from sending any further messages. Maybe even without my deletion of the /qfile would not have sent any additional messages. Just to be on the safe side. Anyways, attached is the related portion of the logs/error file to help you troubshoot the issue. You wold agree, this should not be happening... the cron/qrunner was set to run every minute..... The error file says that the kcc-news list file was corrupted, however, it seems to be just fine. num_spawns not used in v2.0?

As the little old lady says, "where's the beef?" In 1.1, Deliverer.py used num_spawns, but v2.0 doesn't use it anywhere. So, the end result is that my system isn't doing any splitting. This is causing mail delivery problems(specifically, it's taking 30 minutes when it used to take 2-3 when I was running 1.1) This was based on a quick look/search by a friend and I; we know next to nothing about Python, so I may not have things exactly right, but we know when we can't find a variable in use anywhere and we're pretty sure on that part :-) What's the scoop? unsubscription-approval

I've just uploaded a patch to Sourceforge which adds unsubscription-request-approval. This mirrors subscription-approval in that unsubscribe requests get held for admin approval. This is configurable per list, of course, just like subscribe-approval, and also has to be explicitly enabled by the site-admin -- the default is to disallow the setting. Some small notes: - If a site-admin changes the default from allow to disallow, lists which have it set need to be manually reset. This may be seen as a bug, but it allows some lists to have it defined without allowing other list admins to turn on the feature. I dont rely on it, though, so if someone gets inspiration to fix it, please do ;) - I didn't update the DATA_FILE_VERSION. - I didn't test this particular patch overly well, since it's kind of tricky to get a decent diff without 'cvs diff', and I couldn't use 'cvs diff' because the patch adds a file. ('cvs diff' doesn't 'create' files, and patch with POSUXLY_CORRECT defined (which is necessary to apply cvs-diffs) will not create new files regardless.) I *might* have forgotten a part of the patch, but I went over it a few times, so I dont think so. - I had to use some trickstery to only optionally add the unsubscription-approval feature to the list-options dictionary. This works just fine, but I'm not sure if it's the optimal solution. The patch should be easy to find, as it's the only patch, currently ;) Oh, I also have two other small patches lying around, but I'm not sure if they're suitable for inclusion. One is a 'posters-file' config setting, which is a string containing the full path to a file with email addresses, which gets appended to the posters list. It's very useful to us, because we have a lot of employees with a *lot* of aliases, and they post from every one ;) but it's not particularly secure, currently. The other patch is a very rudementary Archive access restriction: We send a lot of private information over the lists, and it wouldn't do for someone from, say, a competing company to guess an employee's mailman password and thus gain access to the list archives. However, I do want to use mailman password checking for the archives, so I can't use a 'public' archive with a normal .htaccess restriction. So I've added a list of strings (containing (parts of) ipaddresses or networks) which are matched against the REMOTE_ADDR environment, which should contain the ipaddress of the requester. To do that, I've also added a StringList field type, which is like the EmailList field type, stripping and filtering the list of strings, but without the Email validation check.
