Hi, I am an undergrad computer science student at manipal institute of technology, india and a prospective gsoc 2013 participant. I have a nice experience in django,bootstrap, jquery and json which i got during my previous internship. I really liked most of the mailman project ideas and started working on one of them today. As i know, there is a tradition of fixing a bug to get into any open source organization. So i worked for few hours on https://bugs.launchpad.net/postorius/+bug/1066184 today. Now user can edit his first_name and last_name. There are few problems that i faced and want to discuss with core developers: 1. There is no model class which derives the base User class, to store values like twitter_id, irc_nick etc. (Should i create one ?) 2. Can username be changed ? The changes i have done today: 1. first_name and last_name can be edited and saved using jquery Changes that i am planning to do tomorrow: 1. Add bootstrap timeout alert on change() and save 2. add model entry for irc_nick,website and twitter_id I have already submitted the merge request. Hope you guys will look into my code and correct my mistakes. Thanks Varun Sharma

If so, the shortest path home is likely to be installing Ubuntu there. Otherwise, we'll help as we can, but I doubt any of the mentors are using that environment. It's likely to be somewhat painful in the long run as well, as Barry has indicated that he really wants Mailman 3 to be a Python 3 application. I don't want to discourage you. But please be realistic about your choice of environment.

Please note too that MM3 supports an IArchiver interface, for which multiple implementations can and do exist. The core has several archiver interfaces, and HyperKitty has an add on that can be enabled to add HK support too. I'm not sure what it would take to add mod_mbox support, but I can't imagine it would be that difficult. One thing we are lacking though is the ability for individual list owners to opt-in to or -out of system-wide available archivers. That's probably not a lot of work to enable, but it does involve a schema migration most likely. (Hmm, I just had an interesting thought about that...) -Barry

I promise to try and do better proof-reading for the emails I post. To correct how my earlier email reads, please interpret the question I asked as: ..what if we could invite/reach out to administrators who've chosen to host their apache project-lists using 'mod_mbox approach' to consider MM3 as a replacement solution? With any list-admins among those projects tying the projects' mbox files into a mailman page, we'd achieve more users trying mailman, was my only take-away point for that, I guess. To move into GSOC, I'd like some information on "RSS and/or NNTP access to Mailman archives." - and, more specifically for RSS, is displaying an mbox file being achieved anywhere on-line using mm3 facilities (ie: hyperkitty + django templates?) - I assume yes per mention of the live MM3 instance with 2500 users' existence, but perhaps that only runs the email part and its archives are not web-exposed via archive-interface- was the URL for it mentioned when it was learned of during pycon? A while back, I proposed contributing to MM3 in the area of archive searching and MM2 backwards -compatibility and am considering further, still: Some research I wanted to share is: When navigating some Apache projects, I discovered many are hosted on one of four platforms [per here<http://apache.org/foundation/mailinglists.html>] but since we welcome the idea of ideas and frown at lock-in, what if we could invite/reach out to administrators who've chosen apache lists to use (on mod_mbox approach) <http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/> to consider MM3 as a replacement solution? This would allow us to grow the base of users by attracting an audience potentially with the resources to provide some nice observations,contributions to MM3's project I'd guess, maybe? MM3 marketing/capture strategies to rest - to return to researching MM3 alternatives, I evaluate Apache's alternatives as: - mail-archive.com, markmail (good but kinda proprietary, right?); - marc (monolithic?); - and Apache's mod_mbox (GSOC project - 2005) To expand more, maybe it is required for apache projects to host/use mod_mbox and others, but I am wondering, then, is mail-archive.com really the likely system of choice used in *lots* projects due to searchable-archives function? I had mentioned sharing an AMI instance with mailman 'working' on it but for some reason had lagged. I did not configure it to send mail yet, but setting up postfix on Ubuntu can be done for that relatively easily, if configuring MM3 is about as tough/easy as for mm2 (i'd guess it is ~the same) - the issue with making AMI's available is that the images have to be backed up to an ElasticBlockStore(EBS), which entails a cost (considered as: live-,running image==free; static,shareable image==fee associated) The last status discussed was to maybe upload the image to somewhere else that would be free, I think (Terri?) but it seems that approach would negate any advantage offered by having the image (the download would be on the order of several Gigabytes...do we want to keep tossing ideas about the VM / (rasbPi???) approach? Getting people to use tags would be challenging for a lot of mailing lists, given how hard it is to get them to use topics correctly (or even dlists, although I've seen a lot more success with those). You'd probably have to work on tagging automatically as well if you wanted it to ever be useful. It might be cool, but to be completely honest, we're looking for more sure-thing desired projects this summer so that that we can showcase them in our next release, so you might have a bit of an uphill battle convincing us that this particular feature would fit the bill. Filters for archive download might be more interesting, although again, I'm unsure how many people would use it. Still, I can see that lots of people would potentially use filters for views on archives. Have you taken a look at what HyperKitty is doing now to see how your idea might fit in with what's already there? Both of these might actually be interesting in conjunction with the work that's already happening on dlists, so you might want to read up on that (check the Mailman or Systers wikis or just go through the archives of the list) and see if it spawns any new project ideas. Since you're looking at something in Mailman core, I recommend you take a look at the "easy" bugs there: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mailman/+bugs?field.tag=easy You might also find it helpful to read the .rst docs for Mailman, which can be found in html format here: http://pythonhosted.org/mailman/ You might also want to do a bit of searching through the wiki/list archives to see some of the thoughts people have had on what anti-spam in Mailman should look like. You don't have to take any of it as The One True Way, or even pay attention to it all in the end, but if you could set up a wiki page summarizing the ideas and arguments, it'd get you up to speed and provide a resource for later. Other than that... we've pretty much tried to put everything we could think of into the wiki docs, so if you've read those, you've got a good idea of where to start! Terri
