Back from Germany with new ideas and 3 bronze medals won by our contestants. :) Sadly I haven't heard anything about those merge requests I made a week ago. Anyways, onto ideas. I'll be applying to either one of the following ideas, please comment on the open questions. = RSS access to access to archives = Should this be a part of Mailman core as a pipeline (similar to NNTP) or is something else envisioned? = Log monitor = Are there any previous projects that you had in mind that implement this as suggested? Should this only be used for emailing reports of oddities (monthly/weekly reports) or perhaps could be integrated into a dashboard displaying the recent statistics? Which of those two ideas is currently higher on the priority list (including perhaps Administrative email message log)? Interested in - Better User Settings Management

Hey everyone! I had introduced myself earlier on this list but I guess I can do it again. :) I'm Sneha Priscilla, a final year undergraduate CS student from Bangalore, India. I was a previous Summer of Code student for Systers last year and I have in the process, worked with a lot of Mailman too. I am especially interested in Postorius and would like to implement one of the following ideas this summer: 1.Better User Settings Management 2.Design interface "themes" for specific types of list 3.Enhance list style capabilities The one I am most interested in is 'Better User Settings Management'. I'd like to know if it's a feasible idea for this summer and how important is it on the list of project ideas for Mailman this year? Also, since this is something which could also serve as an important Systers project, is it viable to be joint mentored by Systers and Mailman? I have worked with both Mailman versions 2.1 and 3, so I feel I have a nice idea about working on user settings and I hopefully, will be able to do justice to this project if given a chance. You can probably even build a test deployment without root, but you may need it if you're going to bind to privileged ports, although neither the REST http server, nor LMTP server listen to privileged ports by default. A problem you would have to work out with this approach is how to properly integrate this when a site/list could have multiple enabled archivers, some or all of which are remote to the Mailman system. Remember that in MM3 we won't have an integrated archiver like Pipermail that we can just assume will be there. Even the web ui isn't as tightly integrated any more. This doesn't mean you can't still do this. See for example the additions our stable url proposed add-ons to RFC 5064 as an example of how you would have to think about this. -Barry

Hi, My name is Elias Assarsson and I am interested in doing a GSoC project for Mailman. The idea I found most interesting is Scripts for migrating from Mailman 2.1 to Mailman 3 http://wiki.list.org/display/DEV/Google+Summer+of+Code+2013#GoogleSummerofC… . Where can I more information about this idea? I do not know if it is a good idea but I am thinking that using Augeas http://augeas.net might be a way to handle the migration of configuration from one format to another. For instance I found the following https://www.redhat.com/archives/augeas-devel/2012-January/msg00050.html when researching the idea. I have no experience with Augeas but this might be a good opportunity to learn it. I do however have experience with Python (and other scripting languages such as Ruby). Any input or help in developing this idea would be welcome. Some things about me. I am a GNU/Linux user for almost ten year and a student in computer science courses in Sweden. If not, we should concentrate on (1) exporting policy based on Mailman databases to MTAs via milters, and/or (2) importing existing functionality from existing spam filters such as SpamAssassin to Mailman. The big problem with (2) is that it has already been done; it's only a few lines in a Handler. Steve
