Mailman Core 3.3.9 Release

Hello Everyone, Mailman 3.3.9 is now published to PyPI! Thanks to everyone who helped make this release possible. Minimum supported Python version for this release is 3.9, we had to drop support for 3.7 & 3.8 due to incompatibilities with importlib-resources package. Maximum Python version supported right now is 3.11, we haven't yet added 3.12 to CI, so un-sure if there are any errors there. how to debug Hyperkitty Django Q tasks?

Hi Mailman developers! We faced an issue with Hyperkitty Django Q tasks and we now trying to deep dive into the technology. The issue was initially noticed by a very high load of CPU when running periodic tasks. There are no errors in any log files (mailmanweb.log and uwsgi-*.log), but if check the web URL http://lists.server.tld/admin/django_q/success/ - there were no successful tasks for a month (all other pages in DJANGO Q section are also empty). We now trying to debug the issue but it seems that the errors which occur in the tasks are not logged anywhere. Adding "DEBUG = True" into the settings_local.py changes nothing and it's not clear how to change the "verbosity" parameter used here: https://gitlab.com/mailman/hyperkitty/-/blob/master/hyperkitty/search_index… Do you have any advice on how to debug those tasks? Error in `mailman-web conmpress`

Hi, I'm seeing this in our GSOC student's build of the suite. I don't yet know if it's related to his changes, just wondering if anyone has seen it or has any ideas how to resolve it: % mailman-web compress --settings settings --pythonpath `pwd`/var/etc Compressing... Hi there, Mailman is so old-fashioned as name and man dominated in respect to the gender discussions. It is time to rename it to Mail-Miss, MailMom or Mail-Woman for a while?. Better neutral: (MailHuman or even:) Mailpeople. If you de-attach from the "postman" and "running man" probably a "Mailmatch" or best: "Mailme" would fit. (Also Mailmoon and Mailmood are possible). Words That Start With M | Britannica Dictionary https://www.britannica.com/dictionary/eb/3000-words/alpha/m Otherwise add a star to the Mailman* to indicate it stands for men, women and divers people delivering mail, and give a press release. Making Hyperkitty more friendly to Search Engines

cross posting, since I sent this to mailman-users@, but wanted to distribute over mailman-developers@ Hello, it would be good, if Hyperkitty integrates better with search engines for public archives. In particular: • generates sitemap files, containing information about each archive page, created by Hyperkitty, when was it last modified, how often is the webpage expected to changes (never) — https://gitlab.com/mailman/hyperkitty/-/issues/467 ) . This way, when search engines index Hyperkitty archives, they will crawl just what changes since the previous crawl, and not everything. Crawling everything repeatedly generates a lot of server load. • include metadata about when the hyperkitty archive (article) was published — https://gitlab.com/mailman/hyperkitty/-/issues/466 . Then search results will show (sometimes) the date of the publication • tell search engines immediately, whenever new public archive weppage is generated — https://gitlab.com/mailman/hyperkitty/-/issues/468 , so that they can in theory index that webpage immediately. I have experience on integrating webpages with search engines on the above bullets. If somebody is willing to implement these features in Hyperkitty, I can answer any questions related to the search engines, not related to the code in Hyperkitty itself. The biggest friends of search engines are fast loading webpages. Removing the dependencies on jQuery in django-mailman3, Hyperkitty and Postorius would result somehow faster loading pages. I can assume that some administrators (=me) refrain for letting search engines index the archives, because the servers have not enough capacities to handle the huge webcrawling periodic traffic. Implementing the above suggestions shall remove the obstacle letting search engines index public archives. Greetings Дилян

Fix for Mailman core #931 log rotation bug

Hi all, I think I have a fix for the log rotation bug (https://gitlab.com/mailman/mailman/-/issues/931). I'd appreciate review of the theory of the fix, which is discussed in detail in the issue. I've done some live testing on a staging system, and loggers appear to be reopening their logs as expected after about 15 hourly rotations. I haven't had time to generate a test. The environment where I'm doing the work is really closed, but I'll do the sneakernetting and a preliminary MR later for convenience in review. Steve

GSoC 2023

Hi all Applications for GSoC 2023 are open and I would like to apply. Program details: https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/programs/2023 You may need to log in with a Google account. We could go under the PSF umbrella again (they've applied already), or we could go it alone. The advantage to the PSF is we can possibly borrow a mentor from them as we did in 2022 and they'll do some of the org admin stuff, the advantage to a separate Mailman org is money and tickets to the Mentor Summit if they do that. There may be other stuff I haven't thought about. If we decide to apply ourselves but get cold feet, I suppose we can withdraw without penalty and go with PSF if we do so a reasonable time before deadline (Feb 8). I need some backing from core devs (at least one backup mentor, which is light work if I'm healthy), but I plan to post to the lists to see if any of the usual suspects would like to be mentors, too.
