Looks like the "error decoding..." problem is more general. It turns out that once I log on to admin *any* list, if I attempt to change to any other list, I start getting the "error decoding" problem. Mailman and LDAP?

I don't know if this is discussed already so I'm sorry if it is. I work for AOL/Netscape and we are evaluating Mailman for mozilla.org and possibly to replace existing SmartList based internal mail lists. But our requirement for the new product is that it needs to have LDAP support built in. Does Mailman has any plans to integrate LDAP support into it? Risto

I filed bug 108167. I guess I'm not sure of the "patch" protocol; I could have posted a fix (I had one at the time I filed the bug). Sometimes I put it in the bug itself, although I didn't for this one, primarily because it was as much a "did you mean to leave this out?" question to Barry as anything. But what's the story with patches? Is it just a "share this as you like" feature, as a convenient method of demonstrating the code to Barry et. al., or ?.. I guess what I'm asking is "Barry/Harald/other cabal-developers: do you want patches posted?..." Indexing of archives

I've dropped a patch on sourceforge [#100867] to add the META tags to the archive index/contents pages which prevent robots using those pages in the full text indexes. I have found this makes search engines hit the articles on searches and not hit the index pages so much (which can be a real pain - they seem to generate a real pile of false positives). Works very nicely for me, nice short patch, enables me to use htDig on pipermail archives without problems. Non standard formats

When converting a mailing list to mailman, I copied the mailbox (which contained the mailing list discussions in the mbox format) to the necessary location, deleted the old archive and generated a new one with bin/arch. However, this ignored many mails in the mail box. The reason was the "^From " line had an extra time specifier (something like +0600) at the end. I had to filter the mailbox through sed 's/$^From .*$ [-+][0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]$/\1/' to remove them, and after that all the mails were added to the archive without problems. Please make mailman work with such mail boxes, because this is the easiest way to convert an already running mailbox to Mailman. Also I noticed that the email bug-mailman(a)gnu.org doesn't work. It reaches python.org and comes back. Regards, Anuradha

While not directly on-topic for Mailman, this directly relates to the prior discussion of large mailing lists, and Barry's current efforts to set up test beds for large subscriber base lists. http://www.coker.com.au/postal/ --<cut>-- This is a program I am writing to benchmark SMTP servers. I started work on this because I need to know which mail server will give the best performance with more than 1,000,000 users. I have decided to release it under the GPL because there is no benefit in keeping the source secret, and the world needs to know which mail servers perform well and which don't! It works by taking a list of user names and applying random transformations to them to get the FROM and TO addresses, this is because if each email address takes 30 bytes of storage then 1,000,000 accounts would take 30M of RAM. 3,000,000 accounts would take 90M of RAM which would be more than the memory in my test machine (this would cause thrashing and make the benchmark invalid), and it would take ages to load all that data from the hard drive. Using 100,000 accounts and applying a transformation to map them to 30M accounts is a much more efficient use of resources. When sending the mail the subject and body will be random data. b3 not working anymore?

Hi, I'm running the latest cvs (just updated again this morning just to be sure) but their doesn't seem to be any more posts being send out on the list?? they all arrive on the approval page, but once approved they vanish into nothing... I'm not sure how long this has been going on though... anybody else having the same trouble? Ricardo. --

Hi folks, If you haven't done so already, please upload all outstanding bug reports and patches for Mailman to SourceForge. I don't think I'll be getting out 2.0 final by this Friday -- too many other things have come up -- but I /do/ plan on working hard this week and weekend. I'd like to have a release candidate out by Friday with any last minute urgent bug fixes, with a final release next week (while the rest of the Pythonlab guys are at ORA's OSSCON). Thanks, -Barry
