Just for curiosity's sake, what would happen if one were to backup one's list files, purge mailman and then reinstall, and move the list files back? Might this revive a system running on debian, which is currently broken? Scott

rename mailman hostname

Hi, I needed to rename the mailman server (2.1.5) from mailman_server1.admin.net to mailman_server2.admin.net. I followed the FAQ 4.29. (1) I changed the hostname to mailman_server2.admin.net on the system. (2) I modified the mm_cfg.py as follows: DEFAULT_EMAIL_HOST = 'mailman_server2.admin.net' DEFAULT_URL_HOST = 'mailman_server2.admin.net' VIRTUAL_HOSTS.clear() add_virtualhost(DEFAULT_URL_HOST, DEFAULT_EMAIL_HOST) DEFAULT_URL_PATTERN = 'http://%s/mailman/' I restart mailman and run fix_url: $ ./mailmanctl restart $ ./withlist -l -r fix_url listname (3) I changed httpd.conf and ssl.conf to match new hostname of mailman_server2.admin.net. The new mailman_server2..admin.net server was working (such as posted to mailing lists and run command line). But I found a problem: After I used URL of https://mailman_server2.admin.net/mailman/admin/, I could log in the list successfully. But I could not modify the contents of configurations and do other administration work. When I tried to submit the changes, I got the following message: "Although this page is encrypted, the information you have entered is to be sent over an unencrypted connection and could easily be read by a third party. Are you sure you want to continue sending this information? -> Continue" After I clicked the Continue Botton, nothing changed about the list. I did add the "DEFAULT_URL_PATTERN = 'http://%s/mailman/'" to mm_cfg.py and restart mailman. Did I miss some steps for renaming the mailman hostname? Thanks for your help! Mardin

How to move a list from 2.1.2

I have a bunch of lists that resides on an old 2.1.2 installation.. I want to move these to a newer machine with Mailman v2.1.7. I'd like to move both lists and archives. On the mailman web site, a script called "move_list" is mentioned, but that script doesn't exist on any of my systems... Tips and hints are welcome! -- Anders Norrbring Norrbring Consulting

Hello! I've just subscribed to see if anyone here is familiar with the error report I am now getting repeatedly from mailman (see below). Also, I'm not certain yet, but it appears my archiving may have stopped working. When I go to check archives, there are no listings for the current week. If there is a specific set of info I can post (config, etc) let me know. I've made no changes to list settings in the past few days, and my postfix logs seem to show individual e-mails going out from the lists. Incidentally, I'm sorry, but generic fixes like "upgrade mailman" won't help me, because I'm stuck with the Red Hat 9 rpm. Ok our one of our resident tech guys that was a Linux guru set up a Linux box with Mailman on it. It was great. He left so I decided to try and set everything up myself. I am not a total newb, as I run a Windows Box with Apache and a few other server aps. Well at least I didnt think I was a newb. I went through about a ½ dozen different Linux distros trying to find one I was comfortable with and after about 40hrs of installing and dumping I have given up trying to do it on Linux. I have read a bunch of FAQs on running Mailman on Windows and unless I am mistaken its a real pain. So what I am looking for is either any easy straight forward way of installing Mailman on an NT box running Apache or a good alternative to the much loved and great Mailman software. I dont even NEED all the functionality of mailman. I need a mailing list server that will handle 100 members. I can sign them up manually. It has to receive mail and forward it back out to the group. Performance on mailman

I am doing something wrong. I am running mailman with about 100 lists (announce only). A couple are pretty big (40K + addresses). They, however, are used infrequently. The big list has one weekly mailing and the others much less often. Currently, there is NO mail queued or being sent (tail -f on maillog is silent), yet doing a top on the mailman process shows mailman consuming 1240M of virtual memory and a task size (RES) of 811M. I am no Linux Performance Tuning expert, but the system seems pretty pokey. This is with no mail going out (and the occasional subscribe / unsubscribe trickling in). When a mailing goes out, the system becomes virtually unresponsive, usually resulting in a http 500 error. If ssh in to the system, I am eventually able to kill mailman, at which time the system perks right up again. System is a P4 with 1 GB of RAM. Mailman 2.19rc1 What am I missing? Thanks, pete

Digest Options

I have some users who would like the digest to be provided in a different format, which seems a logical third option over and above Mime/Plain. The ideal would be a single HTML message which combines all of the HTML/plain messages that have been sent to the list, with attachments aggregated and placed at the end of the combined message. This is something quite different than mailman does already - but I felt it was worth raising. An alternative might be a combination of the current Mime/Plain options, with a single text containing all the messages, with Mime attachments at the bottom for any attachments to the original messages.
