I'm setting up a new CentOS8 mailman server to take over from our ancient existing one, and have run into some issues trying to get it working.
I installed mailman from source, following the directions here:
I'm at: https://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/mailman-install/postfix-integration.ht…
Run the bin/genaliases script to initialize your aliases file.
% cd /usr/local/mailman
But when I do this I get the following. Am I supposed to create these data/aliases files manually? Where are they supposed to go? There is no data/ directory in /usr/lib/mailman and /var/lib/mailman has a data directory but nothing inside named aliases
[root@dhbmailman2 mailman]# bin/genaliases
To finish creating your mailing list, you must edit your /etc/aliases (or
equivalent) file by adding the following lines, and possibly running the

Hello, I’m hoping someone can help with this issue.
Using Mailman version 2.1.33, that is the default list software under cPanel.
Managing multiple lists and have this same issue for a long time now.
Emergency moderation of all list traffic is On, but list members should be able to send to the list after their message is approved by a moderators.
However, only messages that are actually sent from a moderator to the list are actually distributed to the list.
Messages send by list members show up in the pending requests moderation queue, but when approved by the moderator they just disappear and are not sent out to the list.
This bug appears to be reproducible consistently across multiple installations of Mailman.
Is anyone else seeing requests to their mailman install that look
something like this:
Aug 18 15:10:16 2021 (31166) Hostile listname:
Basically, the list name is correct, but the added "__;!NV..." makes it
The pattern is rather consistent ... "__;!NV" followed by a bunch of

I suspect this stems from something inside this local corporation, but I'll ask the question:
I have a person contacting me to remove her work email from our subscription of our local email list, but her email is
not subscribed. Usually when this happens, I have them forward a list message to me and I can discover which email it is
being sent to.
Usually the messages sent are from "name of subscriber via"listname(a)domain.com. (She gets the digest which I don't so
not sure that is different). But when she forwards me one of these digest messages, it is from: "Listname
<listname-bounces(a)domain.com> on behalf of Listname-request(a)domain.com <listname-request(a)domain.com>"
And instead of the usual listname(a)domain.com unsubscribe,archives,info link at the bottom of the message, it has what is
probably an internal security link by the IT system of https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?
(with the actual link following - and redirects to our info page). This may not help, but include it to show they have
some kind of system within the corporation.
I've asked her to run it by the IT department of her corporation, but thought I would ask here in case there is
something I need to do instead. I thought that the "on behalf of listname-request(a)domain.com" was pretty unusual, or
something I don't usually see anyway.
it seems that 1 of our sysadmins inadvertently deleted the group 'mailman'. since then, no mail is being distributed.
we re-created the group, but that has not fixed the problem.
in order to restore normal operation, perhaps something must be done to this group besides simply creating it.
any suggestions appreciated.
My ancient mailman installation, 2.1.9 (yes, I know, I'm in the process of
decommissioning it) suddenly stopped working overnight. When I send a test
message to a test list, I see it being received by sendmail in
Aug 11 09:19:53 mailman sendmail: 17BGJi9w029255:
to="|/usr/lib/mailman/mail/mailman post kbowentest-l",
ctladdr=<kbowentest-l(a)mailman.redacted.comu> (8/0), delay=00:00:08,
xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=prog, pri=124726, dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent
But then it never shows up in the mailman logs and never gets posted:
[root@mailman mailman]# grep kbowentest-l /var/log/mailman/*
I've restarted mailman and sendmail, and don't see any obvious problems. No
configurations have changed recently aside from deleting some lists. I
haven't worked on this in quite some time, can anyone point me to some
emergency troubleshooting ideas?
