Hi. I'm a new member of this group but have been running an email list with Mailman for a long time. I am now setting a list up again and want to give a "look and feel" to the list which has more branding of my user group as a whole, and less of a Mailman-feel. I seem to remember that besides editing the public HTML pages, it is possible to edit the text files which Mailman automatically sends out for certain needs (such as 'approve.txt', 'adminsubscribeack.txt', 'invite.txt', and so on). A. Is this still the case? B. If so, where can I find them? (in case they've changed from the ones I have from long ago). C. Where do they need putting, so that Mailman can use them again? It's important that I should tell you that Mailman on my webhosts servers is a "server-wide" installation, and I don't get to edit anything which other clients to their servers need. This would be only for my own use, and as such I need to know where these files go in my own webspace, and how to get Mailman to use them instead of the default ones. I should also say that I have done this before, so unless the facility to do this has been ditched in recent years, I *should* still be able to do it ! Does Mailman perhaps look for these files somewhere in my webspace (which I have to give a specific name), and if it doesn't find them it goes on to find its default versions of these files? Running two list with same email prefix

Hi all, I'm running a mail server with Debian Lenny, MTA is Postfix and i will use postfix-to-mailma.py script to run list I would set up Mailman for running mailing list with same email prefix on different domains, obvious with different list names For example we have ml.domain1.com and ml.domain2.net, i would like to have LISTADDRESS LISTNAME tech(a)ml.domain1.com tech-ml.domain1.com tech(a)ml.domain.2.net tech-ml.domain2.net In this way i can have the same address on differente domains and Mailman (my version is 2.1.11) can distinguish between lists because the list name is different. The list name will be also used to access web interface, so we have http://ml.domain1.com/mailman/admin/tech-ml.domain1.com http://ml.domain2.net/mailman/admin/tech-ml.domain2.net Is possible to accomplish this task? Any idea?

Hide list address?

Hi, Is there any way to configure Mailman such that, for an announcement-only type list, when a message is sent to the list, the To: shows the member's address, rather than the list address? Some list software allows the ability to hide the list address itself, so that address is not advertised. I couldn't find any configuration specific to that.

Using cronjob to remove and add members to a mailing list

I want to be able to run a cronjob on my server that uses a php script to add new users and/or remove users from a mailing list. Not having any luck finding any simple examples. My thought is that the php script would get email addresses from a database (which I can do) and then feed them to a mailman command line to either add or remove a user. The cronjob is entered via Cpanel. Have several cronjobs that modify databases but have never tried something that would actually execute a unix command. Thanks, Pineyscripter

Hi, i`m trying to reject messages bigger then MAX_MESSAGE_SIZE. I configured my Hold.py was described bellow: replaced hold_for_approval(mlist, msg, msgdata, _ MessageTooBig(bodylen,_mlist.max_message_size)) with rej = MessageTooBig(bodylen, mlist.max_message_size) _ raise Errors.RejectMessage, rej.reason_notice_ The message was rejected, but the sender dont receive any notify about that. Hi, I am a newbie to Mailman and cpanel and I need some help, please. I have set up a mailing list for my tennis club (about 300 on list) and it seems to work ok BUT each recipient only sees the mailing list name rather than his own email name in the 'to' box. One of the recipients recently did a 'reply to all' and consequently sent his reply to the whole mailing list. I'm sure there must be a way to prevent this but I can't find it! David Elliott

Add "sender's name/email" to BODY of mail as header?

I want all mails sent to the list to come from the list's email address... But, in this case, if the user forgets to sign their name at the bottom of their mail body, effectively the mail to the list is anonymous...! Is there a way to add the user name (or email address) to the top of each mail so that the mails have the name of the sender, while the mail itself comes from the list address? I have looked high and low for an answer, but noone seems to have the solution. Thank you! Mal

Mailman CGI Error-Group mismatch error

Hi, I received the following error this morning. So I rerun configure again with the following command: ./configure --with-cgi-id=apache --prefix=/var/mailman. I'm still getting the same error. Is there any place that I can look for so that I can debug this problem better? Perhaps, looking at the config history file or something. Any other places that I can check the cause of this error? "Mailman CGI error!!! The Mailman CGI wrapper encountered a fatal error. This entry is being stored in your syslog: Group mismatch error. Mailman expected the CGI wrapper script to be executed as group "nobody", but the system's web server executed the CGI script as group "apache". Try tweaking the web server to run the script as group "nobody", or re-run configure, providing the command line option `--with-cgi-gid=apache'." Thanks Mary

Find a smtp server to send out emails

Hi, This problem is not caused by mailman, but I still want to give it a shot here. I'm hosting a mailing list on top of mailman. Emails are supposed to be sent out by AWS ses. However, ses requires that sender address must be verified, which leads to a problem that emails sent by subscribers to mailing list cannot be sent to other subcirbers, since their addresses are not verified. And it is impossible to verified every subscriber. Are there smtp service providers allowing unverified email address to send out emails, or do I have other solutions? Thanks. Leon

Installing Mailman on a Debian system with Apache 2.4.2, CGI error!

Hi, This is a weird one. I think of myself as knowing my way around Mailman pretty well for a user/admin/installer/upgrader. I'm upgrading to a Debian 9 system from CentOS 6.5. Debian's Apache configs took a bit of getting used to, but I actually like them better. It uses Apache 2.4.2. I wanted to install Mailman from source, since the latest version is 2.1.26, Debian has 2.1.23, and IIRC that's too old to have some screen reader optimizations I want. So I built, installed, all working well. I copied over the Mailman config from my CentOS system to use in Apache, making some changes so it'd work under 2.4.2. If I just go to /mailman/listinfo I get an Elf binary thrown at me, rather than the page saying there are no advertised lists. If I do the same thing from the server using the Lynx web browser, I get the same binary thrown at me, with a page title, "Mailman CGI error!" It sounds to me like Apache 2.4.2 isn't seeing that /usr/lib/mailman/cgi-bin is, in fact, CGI scripts, and is trying to treat them like regular files. Debugging mass invitations using web page interface...

Dear Mailman Cognoscenti, I'm helping one of my list owners send out 5K plus invitations to students to subscribe to his mailing list. Our current configuration: Mailman v2.1.20 RHEL v5.11 Semdmail v8.13.8 Apache v2.2.3 Since this was the first time doing this, I suggested breaking the batch input into 3 groups, 50, 500, and the rest. The 50 went fine, as did the 500, but the largest batch gave him a generic web server error: > Internal Server Error > > The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was > unable to complete your request. > > Please contact the server administrator, root(a)conundrum.unh.edu and > inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might > have done that may have caused the error. > > More information about this error may be available in the server > error log. I looked at the logs and I couldn't find anything that hinted at what went wrong. So I asked the owner to send me the last back and I'd give it a try. I wrote a script that removed folks already subscribed to his list and split the remaining subscribers up into 6 files with a thousand records each. I just tried uploading the 1st batch of 1K, with the following options: Subscribe these users now... (*) Invite Send welcome message... (*) No Send notifications... (*) No And entered a 7 line paragraph explaining the invitation. I ended up having the same error happen. Looking at the Mailman logs, I can't see any difference before or after my submission. User doesn't get added to mailinglist

Hi We have a problem since we updated from Mailman 2.1.27 -> 2.1.29 (FreeBSD). Automatic subscription based on e-mail subject

Hi all: I have the following recurring problem with mailing lists all over the Internet: people do reply to my posts, by they do not address or copy me in their replies. They send their e-mails only to the mailing list. Or they reply to the previous reply, and forget to copy the original poster. So I do not get a copy of the relevant messages straight away. If need to manually fish their answers from the web interface. If there is one. And then composing e-mails is cumbersome. And the subject threading no longer works properly. This problem has annoyed me (and other people on the Internet) for a long time. I cannot subscribe to every mailing list I need to occasionally use. It's far too much. This e-mail is the perfect example of such a come-ask-and-go-again scenario. If I need to subscribe in order to post a question, I turn off mail delivery straight away. Getting a digest with all e-mails does not help either. Replying to a single e-mail in this mode is cumbersome too. Besides, I do not want to manually skip other messages which do not interest me. Other forum software has a nice feature for this scenario: If I post to a subject, I am automatically subscribed to that subject. I then get an e-mail for any new posts with the same subject. The "topic" feature in Mailman is different. Very few people use it. I need something based on the e-mail subject. Is there any way to achieve that with Mailman? Thanks in advance, rdiez

incorrect spam labelling

Not sure if this is a mailman issue, but… Occasionally as moderator I see messages in which "***SPAM*** “ has been prepended to the subject line. The messages are not spam. I do not want to send them out to the list like that but cannot edit the subject line. Is there anything I can do? -Andrew

I got an error this morning about some strange permission while run the cron. Manually treat certain domains as if they have restrictive DMARC policy

Folks: I've got a number of subscribers who's email admins have set a policy such that, if a message is sent to them with their email address as the 'from' address, the message is rejected. This is causing those peoples posts to bounce ... and, ultimately, they get unsubscribed. Although the BEST course of action would be for the mail admin's to alter their spam filters or implement DMARC policies, that's a bit much to ask for. To resolve this, I'm thinking of creating a flat file of domains that are causing this problem ... then modifying the _DMARCProhibited routine, in Utils.py, to read the flat file and treat domains found in that file as if they had a DMARC policy set to reject. Do you think that will work ... or am I completely off base? Nonsubscribers attacking one of my lists.

One of my forums has suddenly been inundated with posts to the list by non-subscribers, most of which seem to be coming from some homosexual list somewhere. These seem to be coming from every place in the world. I receive notices from Mailman every time I check my e-mail listing of 4 to a dozen non-subscribers attempting post to the forum, and I have to go to my admin database and remove and block each one. Is there some way to prevent these jerks from showing up in the database at all? Ken Gordon

Bounce processing

Over the past several weeks, I have received many reports from Mailman concerning too many bounces from certain subscribers who are normally very active on one of my forums. All of these "Bounce Action Notification"'s appear to be coming from only a very few ISPs, the big one being AOL, although also verizon.com is another one. In the past, gmail.com, and hotmail.com have been a culprits. Is there any way to prevent these people from being essentially kicked off the forum until AOL, among others, gets its act together? Some mailing lists are stuck

I have a couple of mailing lists on my mailman server that don’t forward messages to their members. There are no rules that would block them. It all looks like they are stuck in a queue, which would just have to be unstuck. Is there a command-line way of doing that?

Restoring manually backed-up archives into cPanel installation?

I'm trying to migrate a group of Mailman lists onto a new shared hosting provider. I do not have direct access to the original system; the sysadmin there has given me a full tarball of the mailman directory, including the archives/, data/, and lists/ subdirectories. The new hosting provider, to which I do have command-line access via SSH, uses Mailman through a cPanel installation. There's no mailman directory currently, and cPanel itself doesn't have any options for migration. I e-mailed the support group to ask where to put it, and they said that you can only restore a backup that is itself made with cPanel into a cPanel environment; the cPanel version of mailman is different and won't accept backups made manually. Is this true? I've Googled what I can, but haven't found anything that addresses this. If I can't restore the list archives, I'll need to find a different hosting provider, and it hasn't been easy to find one that meets my otherwise very simple needs.

Allow posting from addresses with modifiers?

Folks: Anyone know if it's possible to configure MM 2.1 to allow posting with an email address that has a modifier? For example ... if someone is subscribed as "john+lists(a)example.com", but their email comes from "john(a)example.com", allow that address to post? I've had some people ask me about this ability because they want to use the modifier address to help them filter messages. Folks: Does anyone know if there is a way to prevent MM from adding the original posters email address as a CC when the DMARC munging is done? How many abonents mailman can handle ?

Hi, I would like to create newsletter mailing list with ~3,2mln abonents. The question is, can Mailman handle it ? Will it be possible to import via command line such a big amount of users ? Wrong Indentation in MailMan archive (threads)

Hi. We had some mails missing from the archive, so I ran ./bin/arch listname to update the archive. This fixed the missing mails part, but somehow must have messed up the indentation. All mails got indented three times, and it looks like none of them are connected to each other anymore. Here is an example https://opm-project.org/pipermail/opm/2019-January/thread.html Does anybody know how this can be fixed? Or know what has happened here? I have previously ran the bin/arch script to update the archive if some mails are missing, neveer experienced this indentation issue before. Best Regards, Kristin Solbakken
